    Hello all,
I was wondering wether anyone has had a problem with smudges that seem to be behind the screen.
I noticed this a few days ago and i just thought my 7 year old touched the screen and left a couple of finger marks on it,but when i finally decided to clean the screen i realised the 'marks' were behind.
This has now become really frustrating as all i do now is stare at the 2 smudges.
They are not really big smudges and but can be seen vividly especially on bright/lighter pictures.
I did a search and apparently there is a secondry screen behind the outer one and the smudges are caused by the lamp on the inner screen? Is this true.
Also it doe'snt matter if its warmed up as they are there from when it is switched on.
So,what are my options?,is it the inner screen and i need to contact Optoma for an engineer?,or could it possibly be the lamp that needs a clean?
Also has anyone else had this problem with any other DLP?

Hope someone can help, Thanks ps.I've had my RD50 for 11 months.

I have now found out this could also be static,if so would anti static spray work?

I have one "smudge" on the screen as well, from the start. and the last one had it as well. I posted pic on one of the threads http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=249180
basically, there is something on one of the mirrors. If you noticed it just now then probably that's fly's excrements :)
how big is it? mine's around 1 cm.

    Hi Snap,

If it is something on the mirrors should i contact Optoma?
They are both about 2mm each on the top right of the screen.

I phoned Optoma today and explained and they told me to send an email with all the details,(address, serial No,etc) and they will send an engineer to clean the back of the screen.
So lets hope i get a result.

    Hi Dabs

I have had my RD50 for about 11 months and have just noticed a similar 'smudge - right in rhe middle of the screen! On further inspection there are a number of other small marks - one seems to have a thread (spider web???) running from it.

I too will contact Optoma - but surely we won't have to call an engineer every year to clean the screen?

Furthermore when inspecting the screen I found what I think people refer to as a dead pixel ( a tiny black dot) - I pressume this is not fixable? - but seem to remember Optoma guarranteeing zero dead pixels.

    Hi Andy,

The RD50 does have a zero dead pixel policy so i would mention that when contacting Optoma.
Also your right in stating that 'do we have to call an engineer every year to clean the screen', this seems a bit worrying.
I will ask the engineer when he comes out as this seems a bit unacceptable really.
Although overall im pleased with my TV, especially the PQ and the size of the thing, theres these little things that niggle me.For instance smudges, lamp life, lip sync, and the oil painting effect on panning shots.I know other tv's also have their flaws (including Plasma and LCD) and
maybe im being too fussy but 2 grand is the most i've ever spent on AV equipment. Anyway good luck, Dabs.

    Hi Dabs
The engineer has just been and cleaned all the mirrors, reflectors, lenses etc and it has got rid of all the marks (including the one I thought might be a dead pixel!!!)

Has yours bee done yet? Besides getting rid of the marks, I am astounded at the difference it has made to the picture quality - it is brighter and clearer.

It is something that will need to be done fairly regularly (yearly?) but it is an easy job to release the screen and clean them yourself. (I made sure I was in cos I won't want to pay an engineer once it is out of warranty!)

I too have noticed all the faults you mention (though suprisingly I have largely got used to the lip sync problem that drove me insane initially.)

    regards

    Andy

    Hi Andy,

No engineer yet,not even a phone call.Think i'll give them another call.
    When did you phone Optoma?
Glad its sorted anyway,on close inspection of mine i have noticed the screen is dirtier than i realised.
I will also make sure i'm home and watch what he does.

I'll post and let you know how i get on

    Dabs.

Talking of smudges - I have a Philips 55" wide screen rear projection TV (out of warranty). Anyone know how the front screen comes off? There are definately marks on the reflector mirror.
    Thanks.

I emailed them Wed 26th they phoned me back within the hour to confirm my postcode and told me to await a call from the engineer - which did infact happen a day later. The appointment was made for 2 working days later. He turned up bang on time - all very impressive. Optoma seem to be getting there act together.

Bat-man - I'm sure all scrrens fit differently but should all be fairly easy to remove. The optoma has several screws at the back, which when undone simly allows the screen to be lifted away.

    regards

    Andy

    Thanks,
I just spoke to w.chan again and he says my internet server (onetel) sometimes dont go through to them. Funny how my messages go to every one else in the world.
Anyway sent them another through Hotmail and this time they got it and they phoned me straight away.

    Hi,

Engineer came out this morning and cleaned all the mirrors and its right what Andyxxx said, its so much brighter and clearer.
I'd recommend to anyone to get theirs cleaned as you dont really realise how dirty it gets until its cleaned.
I said to the engineer that i'd see him next year just before the warranty runs out for another clean, lol.
Apparently to call out an engineer its £58 for the first half hour then £25 an hour after.
Glad i watched what he did,as i will next year.

As you watched the engineer do the job was it easy and within the capabilities of an 'average' owner?

    Hi ya,

Yes it did look straight forward but you do need 2 people.
1 to hold the screen as when its leaned forward some cabling where still attached at the bottom..And the other person to clean the mirrors and lens.
He did take the front off at the bottom first and disconnect 1 bunch of cabling(just simply unplug) but left the others(2 i think) as he said "its a bit awkward as they can fall inside and are twiddly to get"
Unscrew the screws at the back edges of the screen then it just comes open.
If you do still have the tv under warranty and you think it looks dirty, give the engineer a call then you can see for yourself,it really is worth it.
    Hope this helps Dabs.

What are the size of mirrors inside?
    How many mirrors are there?
What did he use to clean the mirrors?
Did he clean the back of the screen as well?

    Thanks

    Hi Snap,
Theres 1 big 50" mirror at the back that leans forward from the top,a small mirror
opposite the lens at the bottom front(facing backwards towards the big mirror) and of course the lens.He cleaned them all including the back of the screen with a lint free cloth. He did'nt use any fluids.
It did look strange,a big hollow space and a big mirror, but i was'nt surprised as after all, it is a projector. Dabs.

Also,i forgot to mention, the engineer said that hes been on training for the Sagem's as they have got the "call out" contracts for them now.

Joe? Not sure but his first initial was a "J", and the engineer number was 044. (as on call out reciept)
I was a bit apprehensive at first as he was the one who called on me last year when my TV broke down after 1 day.
He was clueless, but he seems much more clued up now.
He also said he hadn't opened 1 up for a while which maybe is a good thing regarding reliability or maybe there just ain't many of these sets about.
    My serial No is 0028.

    Hi trevperks,
If the serial numbers are anything to go by it seems only 16 were sold between Nov 04 and June 05.
Thats just over 2 per month.
Really dont know why they dont advertise these sets better,or do you think thats a reasonable rate?

    Hi Dabs.
I hope the saying safety in numbers doesn't apply in this case
I would like to think they have sold more sets, as Razor said the new price should make them sell a bit faster.

HI Razor, as you have the 65in I can't think of you as the grandad but more like the BIG DADDY. :smashin:

I too have noticed a smudge on the screen and a black dot which seems bigger than a dead pixel.
Also i am noticing light "escaping" at the bottom of the screen. On dark scenes and widescreen films it causes a flickering along the bottom edge.
Any ideas what this is? Or is it back to Optoma again!!

    Hi Saxman,
Smudges and the black dot=mirrors need cleaning.
As for the flickering,it could be the leads or settings..I also had this flickering on widescreen DVDs and changed the settings on the DVD player which cured it.
