Smoothing Problems in SD with Sony BDP-S6700

I just picked up a region-free Sony BDP-S6700 to replace a not-long-for-this-world Sony BDP-S1200. This is being attached via HDMI to an older 37" 1080P flat screen tv.

The problem I'm encountering is there is some sort of "smoothing" going on with the new player that is getting rid of film grain and a good amount of detail in my SD DVD's. It does the same with blu-rays, but it's not as noticeable. I've turned off everything imaginable in the S6700 menu and tried to match it to the old player as best I can, but still no luck.

Any ideas what might be going on?

Check the video playback settings accessed by the Options button on the remote. There are settings there which could impact your picture, look under Custom.

x [Smoothing]: Reduces on-screen banding by smoothing gradations on flat areas
x [FNR]: Reduces the random noise appearing in the picture.
x [BNR]: Reduces the mosaic-like block noise in the picture.
x [MNR]: Reduces minor noise around the picture outlines (mosquito noise).

Thank you -- I had know idea those settings were buried in the custom menu. Very helpful to know that!

UPDATE: That seems to be the culprit. "Smoothing" was turned on in the Options menu. This was a function not available in the previous Sony player I had, so I didn't even think to look for it. Thanks again!
