Council employees to be banned from taking smoking breaks

Step in the right direction, always gets me how smokers get 'rights' to have extra breaks just to smoke.

I have nver smoked and am against smoking. I also agree that it is not fair that those that do smoke can legitimately take breaks that non-smokers don't get.

    BUT ......

I recognise that people do smoke and that it is a craving. They can't just not smoke or wait to lunchtime. They are not allowed to smoke in the building. They are not allowed e-cigarettes on site (according to the report). So what are they supposed to do - the report doesn't say.

I would recognise the need for breaks but they should be non-working so they should do extra hours to compensate.

But that will open up a can of worms - what about tea breaks, what about those that take a paper with them for a 30 minute crap.

    Cheers,

    Nigel

We once highlighted how many breaks a smoker took by all going to stand outside with them when they went for a smoke.

    Behaviour soon changed.

Some companies already tried the 'you can't smoke in our buildings, on our land or in vehicles' line but found smokers just used to take even longer for a smoke break as they had to take extra time to find somewhere they could smoke.

In this day and age I'm afraid I just can't understand why anyone smokes.....

I cannot abide people in the workplace who feel entitled to fag breaks. I still see it all the time, people going off for up to 15mins a time 3 times a day for a fag, works out to just over 3hrs worth of extra "breaks" in a working week.

And how much time do people waste making tea / coffee, chatting at the watercooler, personal phone calls, browsing the web, online shopping, online banking, texting, etc?

I can't abide any of that either :smashin:

I take the breaks I'm entitled to take. Most times I'm so busy that if I want to leave on time I simply do not have the time to procrastinate at work, I envy the people that do.

Yes they can. There's millions of smokers who don't smoke apart from on their official breaks or after work. Or hey, give up smoking? These people aren't weak (well most of them), they're taking advantage of a situation, a ludicrous out-of-date situation.

So are porn addiction, alcoholism and drug dependency but workers with these don't get extra breaks to indulge them. :D

This sort of story just makes me glad that i gave up smoking five years ago, how ever i think more should be done to help the employees to give up and anyone still smoking should be allowed to vape.

Great news . Smokers have treated pavements etc as ashtrays for years . I hope there is a 100% ban on smoking in the UK

Have you seen the recent vaping adverts on TV - I'm pretty disgusted with them - very glossy - very sexy - encouraging people that it great to vape.

    Cheers,

Plenty of smokers, including my late Dad had to give up a fag for well over eight hours. They were called coal miners. So if your jobs says no smoking during your shift then they really have options. Give up the habit, give up the job or learn to live with it.

Thanks for the info. Never smoked in my life so when smokers have said that they can't manage without one for two hours I just take that at face value.

    Cheers,

Wasn't there a bloke in Germany who got his porn addiction signed off by the doctor and as such, his employer had to let him watch porn at work?

Nothing against smokers but, about time too. There should be no legislation or caving in to meet the requirements of those who have a craving or addiction that is self inflicted.

No one forces them to smoke, it's a personal choice and if they can't last till lunch without having a puff - then tough s**t. Go and work elsewhere! The non-smokers can't just saunter outside for 15 minutes downtime and a chit-chat so why should smokers get dispensation because of a self fed habit.. Utter nonsense

As said above, if every fag break carried a mandatory time penalty of 15 minutes or so to be added on at the end of the individuals day, it'd soon cut it out.

We'll all be dead by the time it eventually happens so won't care one way or the other...

To be honest, he makes a fair point though. A few of us were talking about environmental and community changes that have been made over the course of the last 20 years or so and we were saying that none of us would be surprised if smoking is completely outlawed within the next 20-50 years. It's already banned in most public places and it wouldn't be a huge stretch of the imagination to see it banned period. Yes, the tax loss will be huge but, my money would on the health canvassers winning that battle in the long run. Tax shortfalls can always be replaced, even for fags and don't forget, if we leave Europe we'll be £5200 a second better off... ;)

Good. Then we just need to stop them smoking in cars whilst driving and all is well in the world.

Don't smoke, never smoked but I really dislike the endless war on smoking. If my co-workers want to go outside and smoke, it doesn't bother me or negatively affect me so why would I have a problem with it? Sometime I like to walk to the shop for a bag of monster munch. I'd be pretty p*ssed off if I my Monster Munch walks were denied me. Sometimes you just need to get away from your work. I do my best thinking walking to the shop.

Food and drink should be also banned during working hours, if you can't go a simple 8 hours without needing to eat or drink you should stay at home.

Sounds good to me - I hate smoking - particularly since I briefly shared an office with an actual smoking smoker at uni - it was banned in offices the following year.

Having said that, I've never worked in an environment which is a tightly controlled as defining breaks or counting minutes. You go in, you do work, eat and drink, you go home. Just make sure you are making progress and hitting deadlines :)

Where my wife used to work smokers had to log out of the system when they left the building to have a fag, as they worked flexi time they were able to make up any lost time over the week. Probably the best way.
