Smart phone Newbie question

I am looking at getting an HTC Desire and was wondering what applications would use up my data allowance. Some deals have 500Mb,1Gb or nothing included. Apps would be downloaded at home on wifi so what would I actually use my allowance on?

Any live widgets...Twitter, facebook, news feeds, weather, email. Also streaming video from iPlayer/YouTube and audio from spotify etc..

If you don't plan on Streaming audio/video then 500mb will be enough. I use 300mb ish per month without audio/video streams.

So how is this connected to the phone is this wifi or wap or is it just everything?

P.S Not intending to stream so as you say 500Mb sounds enough.

The phone will use Wi-Fi in priority if a connection is available then Mobile network (2/3g) if not. Only the Mobile network data comes from your allowance.
