My eldest daughter is off to uni, and I want to set up a tiny stereo for her. I have a couple of smsl micro amps and am looking for a pair of tiny, but decent speakers.
Tiny and decent may be asking a lot, but what would you suggest I look at..
Source is her phone plus an mp3 player that I plan to load with either some flac files or large mp3 so that sq isn't too compromised.
I did think of making some cabinets and may still, but am wondering if there are any sonic bargains to be had.
Budget is limited, at a guess £100 might be top whack, and I'm happy to go for used, and have the skills to repair cabinets if that widens the choice.
    Many thanks for any suggestions!

I ought to add that I don't have to use either of the amps, so an active monitor is a possible..

Thanks Paul - I'm watching a pair of Q acoustic on the bay, but those Fostex look good too - I'll see how things pan out.....

No sure how tiny you want to go but I had some small (bookshelf) Acoustic Energy speakers that I was very impressed with considering their size. Think they were 301c's but not sure what the current equivalent model is. I did try them briefly with a tiny SMSL amp too and they still sounded great.

The thing about that sort of solution is that it's more like a dock than a stereo, and I'm an old timer who has this idea that a stereo ought to be 2 speakers and an amp, with whatever input. I agree that they are a great idea, and may well be better for daughter, but the more I think about it the more I am kind of sold on using one of my amps and some passive speakers to make a 'proper' stereo.
    Many thanks though!

    Interesting..!
Wife seems to think that a pair of speakers is the way to go, and that Bluetooth might be more important than having an amp.
    Why is this not straightforward..?

They seem to be a good buy. And student rooms are not generously proportioned so they seem ideal.

And Bluetooth is definitely the way to go. If music is coming from a phone, laptop or tablet it's daft to do it any other way on anything that doesn't aspire to 'real' hifi. By which I mean a good few hundred quid at least.

    OK Paul - first impressions.
They arrived fast and well packed.
Setting them up was so simple, but for both my phone and daughters took a couple of minutes to connect via Bluetooth. The lack of any sort of visual display aside from a light that flashes when remote buttons are pressed is something that I'd get used to but slightly bothers me. However, these are for daughter when she goes off to uni, and she didn't even notice.
As far as sound - I was only allowed a few minutes, but for the money I paid (£63) -

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B06XGT1QM7/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

    - these are a bargain. I can't compare to anything similar in price (though I do have a pair of Q Acoustics 2020i's arriving in a day or two..) but my old Yamaha YST M100 'computer speakers' jut don't compete, although these are maybe 15 years old.
Sound is full, no sign of boom when sitting on a desk and at the sort of volume that student neighbours might complain about, and no harsh top end either. Again, this is straight out of the box, and I only got to listen to 4 tracks, so things might change, but for what its worth, daughter has been playing more music since she got them than I've heard from her room in years.
Very well worth the money in my opinion.
Again, many thanks for your help and suggestions, and hope this might help you !

    Hi Steve.

Thanks for getting back to me. That's a superb price! Less than a night out.

I'm delighted your offspring likes them too. I think I'll invest. It seems churlish not too.

    Cheers sir
