Hello all,

I am looking to replace a 32 inch TV used for gaming on the PS4 Pro.
My use will be gaming at 4k, Netflix at 4k. No SD content or TV. Possible PC monitor usage, this would be YouTube at 4k, but would likely use a 3rd party YouTube app on the TV with no adverts. Think its called Smart YouTube, so ideally a TV with Android OS.
I would have got a soundbar as well, but i have a PS4 headset capable of 5.1/7.1 so will use that for Netflix.

Very close to the TV as the PC is in the same room, I would say the maximum distance i can sit away from the TV would be 0.5 metres.
The main problem is space, there are 2 32 inch tvs on the desk, one just used as a PC screen, the other as a PC screen very rarely, 99% use current is PS4 Pro.
I would say maximum size that would fit would be 45", the smaller the better, wall mounting is not a solution due to the wall type.

I have been on Reddit and there seems to be a big issue with the PS4 PRO bitrate on Netflix, so for some reason the 4k/HDR looks poor compared to the TV's inbuilt app.
Worse case i would use the TV inbuilt app, but on the box of my headset it says Virtual Surround Sound 5.1/7.1 via PS4 only, so i presume this would not work via the TV.

Thank you for your time.

  • What are your sources going to be? For example:
Do you have fibre internet capable of UHD streaming? YES
Will you be buying and using an UHD Blu-Ray player? PS4 PRO has built in

Netflix
HDR games consoles?
PC usage?

Sky, BT or Virgin? UHD or HD?
  • SD vs HD vs UHD use percentage? 10% 10% 80%
  • Movies, sport, console games, PC use in percentage? 50% 0% 40% 10%
  • How close can you view the TV? 0.5 metres
  • Do you need to view the TV from the side or only straight on? Slight view say 30 degrees could move to middle if needed.
  • What conditions do you view in? During the day? At night with lights on? In the dark? All
  • What TV are you currently using and what are expecting to see upgrading to a new TV? Netflix HDR 4k
  • Motion - Are you interested in being able to use motion enhancements on your TV to reduce judder and/or reduce motion blur? Both frame interpolation and frame insertion let you do this, read more about it here. They both have their upsides and downsides, so read carefully. Have PC monitor to view sports on
Please rearrange the following PQ attributes, in descending importance:

HDR Brightness
HDR Colour Accuracy

Now which is most important to you?

Price
Connections
Smart TV (which apps)?
HDR PQ
SDR PQ
Sound
Wide Viewing angles

43 inch I would look at LG ips tvs.

Thank you mate. I try to do my own research as much as possible.
Can you explain the difference between the below 3 models, Which has the wide viewing angel as worse on some as the others. Is there a comparison site i can use to compared the three?
£50 difference in price, i much prefer going with Richer Sounds due to the warranty, so your pick still looks the best mate thank you.

LG 43UM7450PLA £300 PC World
LG 43UM7050PLF £300 Richer Sounds
LG 43UM7500PLA £349 Richer Sounds

I think you are going to have to lower your expectations when it comes to using HDR on these TVs. None are good enough TVs to display HDR without problems. For that you'd need to raise your budget to models like the Sony XG9005 or Samsung Q70R at 49" and up.

The LG UM series you are looking at is a good value TV if you are looking for a TV for SDR content and you prefer an IPS panel to VA. The UM7450 is recommended if you want the smart remote and the UM7500 if you want also 4x HDMI. I'd stay away from the UM7050 in case it comes with an RGBW panel which may be noticeable 50cm away from the TV.

Thank you mate.
Not bothered by the remote as i could literally reach out and touch the TV controls from how close i sit.
The main TV downstairs is a Sony Bravia LG KD55XE8596

Would any of the listed be on par or better in regards to HDR than the Sony? That is what i am comparing to currently?
I don't know much about HDR and TV's, but when you mention problems, do you mean it would struggle with black and high brightness?
This is to be a secondary TV in a small room, the Bravia cost me £650 so would ideally need to be cheaper than this.
I would be watching very little, probably no SDR content at all. Thing the minimum would be 1080p.

Keep looking at Google and i would say £500 or just over is my budget, is the
TX40GX800B Panasonic another contender?

Yes, the Panasonic 40GX800 is the best smallest tv right now and the entry level Son y 43" with IPS the second best.

Hello mate do you know the model of the Sony 43 inch please?

Sony kd-43XG8096 is way cheaper than the Panasonic but still pretty good, you choose between the VA or IPS panel characteristics

Thank you lads. I have my list. Decided it might be better to get a larger TV than small to get better value for money. 2 x 32 inch TVs on the desk already mean i have enough room for about 55 inch.

My list is below, i have tried to put the list in HDR and 4k, with number 1 being the best. Any thoughts?
@ertoil @Dodgexander I note the Sony is 2 years old now, but shouldnt be a problem?

1. Sony BRAVIA KD55XF9005BU £728 with code
2. Sony Bravia KD49XG9005BU £777 with code
3. Panasonic TX50GX800B £574
4. SONY BRAVIA KD43XG8096BU £450
5. LG 43UM7500PLA £349

Maybe the ones with IPS panel are faster for gaming but worse for movies....search for reviews and take your decission

Number 1 and 2 are both effectively the same TV, the newer model comes with more up to date software pre installed but that's about it. It makes little sense to go smaller when you can spend so little to go larger.

Just beware of viewing angles being narrow if you are using close up or to the side.

3.4.5 - I have really no idea why you would even consider these. 3 and 4 are drastically overpriced for budget oriented models. 4. Is a good value budget model if you want an IPS type panel on a smaller TV..but again its a low range model so not in the same class as the top 2.

How close will you view the TV and do you plan to view at an angle?

Have you taken the time to understand panel characteristics? I wouldn't start picking out different models until you have.

Hello mate,
I have attached an image of the room the TV will be in.
The maximum i can sit away is 150cms so around 5ft away. Possible 180cms 5ft 9 if the TV is pushed right to the back of the wall.

At the moment the left TV is used 50% for PS4 gaming and working from home, the right TV is used 100% for the PC in the bottom right of the picture.
So at the moment i use both TV's at once, when i get the new TV, it will be the only one on the desk.
If you notice the very left of the picture is a racing wheel, i am aware this would cause poor viewing angles so can be moved more centrally.

I do a job where eventually we will be back in the office, so working from home would be rare. However if you note where the keyboards are, that is 50cms away from the TV, the wall is 80cms away 2ft 6.
So when using the new TV as a PC it will be very close. 80% of use would be static web pages 20% Youtube or video games.

A 55" TV using a VA panel will probably be fine at 150cm or longer away, but if you view the TV up close for general use you'll probably find the edges start to discolour and look washed out. Really you should only consider a 40/43" model at most for desk usage up close.

Sad part about that is no 43" TV has good HDR hardware, so it really won't be a good experience playing the likes of Pro Evo in HDR on it, but there's not much you can really do about that since the alternative of having a TV with poor viewing angles up close will be worse.

Your desk is a similar depth to my own and I have a 43" UHD LCD TV using a VA type panel with viewing angles similar to the Sony's. I could not use it for a PC monitor up close for a couple of the reasons. The first was poor viewing angles. When you view up close to a TV with poorer viewing angles the side of the TVs picture gets darker and more washed out. The second was sheer size and how high up my desk is. Most desks are pretty high and shallow in depth so the TV has to be close to where you type and it extends a lot higher too. It means you spend a lot of time looking up and around the screen.

I'd say even with a 43" TV you will probably want to be placing it as far back as you can so you aren't so close and you may find that it sits too high to be comfortable.

Using a cardboard cut out or some masking tape on your wall make a template of the different sizes; 43, 50, 55 and you'll have a better idea of what I mean. When doing so use the width and height measurements of different TVs as examples. For instance the 43 LG UM7500 has a width of 975mm and height of 571mm, height is actually 625mm with the stand,

I personally went the route of a 32" PC monitor instead. Like bottom range TVs there's next to no HDR hardware anyway, but its a lot nicer having a smaller screen up close and viewing angles at the sides are not as much of an issue. Its not uncomfortably high and I don't have to look around to see different areas of the display. Generally I feel TVs used as computer monitors, or even larger computer monitors are not suited for up-close desk use unless you have a desk with a lot of depth or you pull your desk out and mount the TV behind on the wall.

If you don't care how the TV looks so much up close and you want it mainly for gaming when you view far away then one of the Sony's you mentioned would be very good options and provide good HDR picture quality in games.

I have ordered the 9005XF from Richer Sounds. They have a 14 day return. Store has no parking, not sure if its even open, but could probably return it there if its open.

Since working from home wont be a permanent thing for myself, i think i could deal with the poor PC and PC gaming so close. Worse comes to worse i can get a small desk or specialist chair with table and get a wireless keyboard and mouse.
I want a new TV for HDR and 4K on gaming and Netflix, i hope this will be a good choice.
I see this TV us on your best buy list still, even though its a 2 year old set now.

Ideally i would want the new HDMI features, but looking into it, i don't like VR and cant see them trying to push past 4K 60fps for a while. By that time, probably time for another TV!

Do you recognise rtings as reliable? They have a Youtube video with settings.

Thank you for your help mate.

Congrats! You shouldn't need to change anything but the basic settings on the TV. The rtings.com settings are fine.

Don't go copying advance settings as you'll make the calibration worse than out of the box!

Thanks mate.
Basically they change a few settings. But i may just change to graphics mode for the PC, game mode when playing games and Cinema Pro when watching Netflix HDR... seems more simple than messing with custom settings. They seem to say they are the best with no messing.

If you play Pro Evo mate should give me a game sometime!

I would if I still played! I bought 2018 but didn't really have the time to play, never managed more than the 2019 demo, although I did enjoy the game! Nowadays I find I have less and less time to game.

Still though, would love to get back into playing again sometime soon, I miss the wonders of master league!

Grinds me so much that people are still playing FIFA over Pro Evo. Pro Evo for me has always had the better games. With modding support its even cooler nowadays!

If you use HUKD mate, they have listed PES2020 on PS4 for £5 on the store, so cant get much cheaper than that. One of the hottest deals of the day.

I can help you download the option file to correct the kits. Can also play 2vs2 co-op with you or 1vs1 friendlies to get you up to speed. I have a great formation to use which is very difficult to defence against.
I never play against the CPU though, always online. Find it much more enjoyable beating people online.
