    Hi,

Can anyone recommend some good small components please? I guess price should be well under £500.

I am working out what I want to do with my PC sound. I have just changed to a sit-stand desk which is amazing but my old Technics stereo had to go.

I will be using this to play games (mainly FPS games, hence wanting 5.1), listen to music and also do the odd bit of just for fun music production (so doesn't need to be studio quality at all).

While I have been looking at dedicated PC setups, from the Logitech Z906 to the Edifier S760D, I am also wondering about getting an AV receiver and going that route.

The main thing that puts me off most kits is the giant sub. I am currently using the Logitech z323 setup and that tiny sub is more than enough for my needs. (200x200x140mm)

Are there any small subs that would work with a proper AV receiver?

For the fronts I would want to use some small bookshelf speakers. Not sure what yet, but something that works across the range for what I want to do.

For the centre again I would like something fairly small that still sounds alright.

The rears would also need to be fairly small. One is going to be mounted on a door (as you do) due to lack of space, so having something as big as a bookshelf speaker is out of the question here.

Not 100% sure I will go this way yet, I guess the main factor here would be the small sub and rear speakers, everything else seems pretty doable.

    Thanks in advance.

If you are looking at a 5.1 for under 500, you would probably be best looking at 5.1 all in one systems. I hear that polk audio are quite popular and Kef also. Maybe the kef eggs and a yamaha sub? The kef eggs are quite small and compact but have great dispersion and have solid reviews and still quite popular to this day.

Cheers, had a look and the Polk is still a bit big for my needs (the sub). It's really awkward. What I really want is a tiny sub, just to tick the box. Honestly the 10.2CM sub I have now is more than enough and I don't even take it up to half way... but what I really want is nice (but small) bookshelf speakers for fronts and tiny rears. Centre needs to be small too. I'm actually starting to wonder if I should just build something myself because no one ticks all the boxes for me.

For gaming quality headphones would be my choice! :)

CA Minx X201 sub is probably smallest (2x 6,5" drivers, one passive), 89 owners reviews.

    Dimensions WxDxH (mm) 210 x 222 x 219

    Cambridge Audio MINX X201 (White)
    Cambridge Audio MINX X201 (Black)

REL T-Zero would be only slightly larger. Quality brand!

    216 x 241 x 260 mm Including Feet and Rear Panel Controls

REL TZero White Subwoofer - Subwoofers - AudioVisual Online - UK Home Cinema and Hifi Specialists

With the speakers it´s tougher. But you don`t need to look for 5.1 package, get either one of these subs and receiver*, then choose speakers freely! There is no need to match speakers and sub as in from same brand! Cables from Amazon cheaply. Gumtree has many 2nd hand options regarding the speakers. Like the mentioned Kef Eggs.

If you want small and cheap the Q-Acoustics 3010's are pretty much peerless
