Which is the best out of the ultra compact camcorders?
I like the idea of something pocket-size to carry around with me.
    Must have DV in/out!
Are the Panasonic GS series any good?

    Hello,

I recently purchased the Pany GS5 and have to say that i'm very impressed with it. It's my first camcorder so don't have anything to use as a basis for comparison but it's not dissapointed me in anyway.

Having said that I did miss not having a built in flash the other evening whilst taking some still's indoors. Which by the way, although not up to a dedicated digi stills cam, are very competant.

The picture quality is very impressive but I imagine that most DV cams these days will produce some very good pictures.

I picked mine up from Tectronics.com. They were offering it for £655 with a free battery (basic one) and 3 blank dv tapes.

A saving of nearly £200 on high street prices.

    regards.
    Drew

I like the Sony and JVC models, but Panasonic NV-GX7B is very good value too. Why not try them in a store, see what you think.
These three makers current ranges are excellent, but you may prefer one or the other.
    Buy the one you like.

I like the look of and feel of them all, I really don't have a preference - it would have to go down to performance.

I looked at the Canon 550i and the Panasonic GS5 and GX7.

I need to know a little more about the differences between the GS5 and GX7 before I can justify spending the extra. I also would like a comparison between the 550i and the Panasonics (is the extra optical zoom on the 550i something to take into account?)

    Cheers

    The NV-GX7B vs NV-GS5B.
Leica Dicomar Lens vs Panasonic Lens
1300k Pixel CCD vs 800k Pixel CCD
    1230k Stills vs 400k Stills
200k Pixel LCD vs 112k Pixel LCD

The GS5 has 500x digital zoom vs GX7 100x digital zoom
    The GS5 weighs 470g vs GX7 weighs 540g

Both Panasonics are superb cameras, as is the Canon, the optical stabiliser is superior but it wouldn't swing me from the Pannys.

    Thanks for the info

would I be right in thinking that the GX7 would be better for stills than the GS5? I already have a decent digital camera for stills, so that's not an issue. I'm more concerned about video performance.

    Regards

would I then be right in thinking the GS5 would be just as good as the GX7 for video performance?
