£2k, I know a laptop can cost £650-£1500 but is it possible to get an entry level SLR bodied digital camera and a laptop for around £2k. Which camera would you recommend (a base model SLR or a high end digital compact)

You are not likely to get a better deal than the Canon EOS 300D with kit lens. There's a rebate from Canon of 100 pounds so you can get the combo for under 500 pounds.

Next up recommendation would be the Nikon D70 which will probably cost you at least 200 pounds more than the Canon (with lens).

Use the rest on a laptop - I won't advise which but get a decent sized hard drive, sufficient RAM and a built-in CF card reader would be useful. If you have a DV camcorder then a firewire card is desirable.

what do you need them for? if its sport photogrpahy then the Canon 20D would be a much better bet than the 300d for its buffer and continuous shooting abiilities.

have you budgeted for memory cards, spare batteries, case, tripod etc??

do you already have lens from canon/nikon - if so, you'd be better sticking with the same brand... and if not, have you budgeted for getting additional lenses??

a 20d with a kit lens can be had for £1100, add another hundred for a bigger CF card and a second battery, card reader and a bag of some sort...a 12in iBook will set you back £699 (or any pc equivalent if thats what you want/use) add £30 for a ram upgrade and you'll have still have change out of your £2k budget for a few odds and ends.

Canon have an outlet on Ebay whereby they auction refurbished/returned stock. EOS 300D's can be bought at bargain prices if you're lucky. (Approx £400 with lense)

You dont state what the use of the laptop is for. If its just to download and browse photo's then you will easily buy one for less than £1k but if your gunna be doing some pre process work or digital manipulation then you will need a more powerful machine. A minimum of 512mb ram and a fast processor is needed. I have a canon EOS300D and use 1gig of ram with a 3ghz Pentium4 dual processor, both bought for less than £2k.

    Hope this helps
