Hello everyone, I'm building myself a "sleeper" pc and I decided to post the build log here on the forums.

I'm going to start off with my definition of "sleeper". Since I'm from the car scene and I've seen many things I will relate this definition to that.

In car culture a " sleeper" is a car that looks like a stock boring family or economy car. The only modifications being made to the engine and supporting parts. Aka. A car that looks like something your grandma would drive, but will beat many sports cars.

I applied the same logic to computers and am in the process of building what I call a sleeper computer.

The computer I started out with was a Compaq presario 5000 from the year 2000.
    .
    Original specs:
    CPU: AMD duron 760mhz 1core.
    Ram: 64mb sdram133
    HDD: 20gb ide
    PSU: 125w atx
    Optical drives: CDROM/CDR drives x2
Gfx card: nvidia vanta lt... Eww
    ...very slow

    Planned specs.
    Cpu: AMD A-10 7850k APU
    Ram: 8gb ddr3 2400
    HDD: sandisk 240 gb ssd
    PSU: corsair cx 750w modular.
Gfx card: nvidia geforce gtx 750ti
    Optical drive: lg dvd-rw drive.
    ... A lot faster.

    Already purchased.
    Ssd
    Psu
    Extra fan
    DVD drive.

    I will upload pics later.
I have left you with a quick current build pic

Your psu is a bit overkill, but I'm intrigued by the concept. What budget are you working to? Oh, and looks like you've sorted yourself "sleeper" furniture too ;)

Whose woods these are I think I know.
    His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound's the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

Just to confirm, you are making a good pc in a crappy case? That may work for a car, but for a PC you will have rubbish fan intake, limited room for cable management, and altogether too much beige.

This is definitely worth bearing in mind. There are plenty of great cases out there that have the 'understated' look yet have really good ventilation and cable routing possibilities.

No disrespect OP, this really isn't a good idea, in fact I couldn't think of a worse idea mate!

Please take this as honest advice which is not criticism.

Put all your new hardware in a proper up to date case :)

P.S we know what a street sleeper is, it doesn't apply to computers mate.

I had a Renault 19 Charmade 16V, I bought it a bolt on turbo kit and fitted it with my mechanic mate. It left Subaru's and Mitsi Evo's from 0-140+.

You'll never race your PC against another PC dude.

I like you're retro thinking, I just don't think this one is a good idea fella.

Its relevant....its a poem from an old Charles Bronsan film called Telefon. The protagonist wakes his sleeper agents with the last lines of the poem:

The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

Not to kick you while your down on this one mate, but the spec you've gone for may run GTA V (As your OP says).. but its not gonna run it very well on that GPU. Id also take a punt that you may have some fitting issues with the new Mobo?

If you want to make a 'sleeper' build there's wiser ways to do it, rather than going for a crappy old case you'd be better going for something unassuming and plain, thinking like a Fractal Arc with silent fans....something like that.

Not sure on the case either. If you were going the full way you'd need to set up your CRT monitor plus PS2 keyboard with two button mouse. :D

Of course you could have an old desktop case that just lights up with the leads going under desk to a modern case with system.

I know it is overkill... It just happened to be on sale for cheaper than a 500w where I looked

I know where your going with the racing Idea, but a sleeper is a simple unassuming car that packs a punch when you need it to

I am going to use the old crt that came with the computer when my parents bought it... Also I'm not going to spend money on a case if I have an empty case laying around... On top of that I will end up cutting out a few holes on the bottom for fans to improve air flow

Gpu is a temp. Until I can afford a better one . plus I want it to look old and store bought. Not custom... Oh and I don't mind fan noise, I have a server rack in my bedroom closet I'm used to it

I know what a sleeper is pal, my Renault 19 had a turbo conversion and a diesel badge put on the back for a few weeks for the laugh, it shocked many a car at the lights ;)

Ha lol . I have a 98 dodge Durango that looks pretty much stock from the outside, but it has a 6.7L hemi supercharged engine under the hood making about 650rwhp. I put that in after the original 5.2L magnum blew up

Already measured space for mobo... And screw holes for micro atx fit perfect. Will be a tight fit but meh.. If it doesn't fit I will get a better case.

You wouldn't a supercharged 6.7 V8 if you had to put your petrol in over here!

No offence taken... This build is simply an experiment and is for fun, eventually I will be purchasing a new case, but for now I will keep on with this case. (in other words a better case is not my top priority, but it's there)

I'd do what others have said, buy a plain modern case, the properly old cases won't have half as much airflow as you need mate.
Petrol costs a fortune over here, it's really heavily taxed!

Triple that $2.45 and add some and that's what we pay, we do have a lot more octane in our fuel and our super unleaded has more octane than the racing fuel you can buy from selected pumps in the U.S but we pay way too much tax on it. You can see why we aren't as mad on V8's as you guys now

Yeah we at $9 a gallon+. Dunno how lucky they are lol

Use money saved on fuel and get a decent one. I cant say much mine is cheap but works, looks ok and temps are good, and better than a 2000 model compaq. Can see the idea but it not gonna be that good.

Put the old bits back in it an take it to the range an blow ut up or shoot it. Much more fun lol

Agree, costs me about a quid in petrol to cut the front and back lawn :thumbsdow

That quid's worth of fuel would pay for fuel to cut all the grass in central park in the US
