Assuming I have a dire shortage of SCART sockets is it possible to connect a VCR, SKY box and TV as follows:

SKY to TV (SCART, RGB) using 'TV' socket on pace box
SKY to VCR (SCART) using 'VCR' socket on pace box to AV1 on VCR

    and to achieve the following:

Watch SKY onto TV as main option.
Play VCR into TV courtesy of sky box (eg no direct connect from VCR to TV, but signal passing from VCR AV1 to SKY AV2 to SKY AV1 to TV AV1)
    Record from SKY as required

...must there be a direct connect from VCR (say AV2) to TV also ?

Your set up is the recommended one to do what you want provided you use fully wired scart leads.

You do not need a direct connection between the VCR and the TV.
