came home Sunday afer weekend away and after a short time "on", the Sky+ (v1) suddenly crashed / re-started itself. It did it a few more times with ever shorter times between restarts. Sometimes restarting on its own (while viewing a channel) and then also when either switching channels or just trying to change it from the default startup channel 998 which comes up first after a restart...

Now - it won't start at all.
It doesn't get any further than just after when all the front panel lights have flashed once, after which it goes back to just the main red power LED and then that goes off too.
Then have to dis-/re-connect the mains to force it to restart, then it does same thing again.

Have tried replacing the 120 GB maxtor HDD (been in almost a year) with the original OEM 40 GB Maxtor but still does the same thing. Have swapped the HDD jumper between positions 1 and 2 & back again (norm in position 1 (left)) on both disks, but still the same thing.
It did this before - more than 6 mths ago, but I thought at the time it was due to overheating with the new 120GB / 7200 disk. After a day or so of no success (eventually just leaving it unplugged) and then swapping back n forth between the 2 HDD's / swapping jumper positions on each disk it eventually came right and has been running fine since...

Forced a software download (hold in BACK button will connecting mains cable). Nothing.
Later, managed to get it started using the 40GB HDD... checked setup, menus and the old recordings, but then after pressing PLAY for the last viewed recording it went off again (after about 30 mins). Haven't been able to get it started again

Tried starting it with the HDD disconnected and it goes thru the same sequence (Power LED, lights flash, power led goes off)... so it looks like whatever it is - it's nothing to do with the HDDand it's even failing before it initialises the HDD ?

It'll be a bummer if it's really shot - as I just added the SDI output modification from PMSvideo.com (at more than 300 US $)

and now even the red power LED won't come on...
(can hear the HDD 'spin-up' when plugging power in) but no activity on the front panel..

I don't know enough about the ins and outs of the box design to offer a definitive solution and it doesn't help that SKY's approach to failures is a straight swap out.

You could email PACE who have a pretty good CS rep and they do accept boxes directly for repair however a SDI mod etc is gonna complicate things.

maybe there IS a God afterall
(just kidding...) But maybe miracles DO happen..

left it plugged in during yesterday, then tried to restart in evening.. still nothing. Then jiggled the connections between the flat ribbon connectors between card module & main board and front panel & main board... then IT WORKED ! (so far still with the original OEM 40 GB disk)
Ran it all evening, all night and still OK this morning. Left it today playing back 4 recordings while I do the video capture with the PC thru the SDI connection...

don't know if this is just coincidence or whether there's a genuine bad connection somewhere along those ribbon connectors, or (like last time it happened) it just needed to rest for a few days before coming on.
Checked with PACE tech support but they couldn't help

fingers crossed for when I put the 120 GB disk back in tonight !
