any one know if Sky+ or TIVO can work without the phone connection ?
a friend overseas asked me if he could use Sky+ where he lives (still in Europe obviously).

and if not, what the other possibilities for Hard disk recording.

The new HD / S-VHS combo machines look like a good alternative, but a bit pricy.

Sky + recording functions are disabled if not connected to a telephone line so as far as I know that is a no no.

There are several points to make so far as TiVo is concerned:-
    - the 'phone connection is used to gather program guide information
    - this is done on a daily call to an 0800 number
    - when I changed numbers recently I didn't need to advise TiVo (i.e. it doesn't know where you are dialing from via caller ID)
    - you could therefore theoretically dial in from abroad but this would of course be very expensive, certainly not free
    - it will work without but only on manual timer which for me defeats the object
    - I have read of something called a TiVo Net add on card which is essentially a network card enabling you to connect your TiVo to another PC (TiVo is essentially a Linux PC custom built to a specific application)
    - I understand this facilitates collection of EPG data via your internet connection which, if it is true, would obviously work from overseas.

    Hope this helps.
