Since starting a Sky+ subscription 13 months ago I have had four boxes. The original one failed after a few weeks when it became unable to record anything. The on-screen message started with the words "System Fault". All subsequent boxes have ultimately failed with the same problem. It seems disaster strikes whenever there is a spike, surge or outage on the mains supply. When the last visiting engineer suggested I use a surge protector, I bought one straight away. However, last night we experienced a three-hour power outage and, upon restoration, I found once again that I could not record. My quack knowledge of these devices suggests that perhaps the hard disk or some related component is failing and I can't help but point the finger at the manufacturer, Pace. Especially when one considers that none of my other equipment (PC included) has experienced any problems whatsoever in such circumstances. I have contacted Pace in the past and, not surprisingly, they deny any weakness. Now that my subscription has passed the 12-month mark, Sky wants to charge my £65 to sort out the problem. Obvious grievances aside I cant help but think that, come the next mains supply glitch, I will be forking out yet again, throwing good money after bad... My question is two-fold. Firstly, am I describing a known weakness and, if so, how have people resolved it? Secondly, can the box be modified to provide it with more robust protection?
