I've have a Nova-HD-S2 card now can I use this card to record my subscribed S*Y channels on my computer e.g. Nat Geo HD, Discovery HD & Eden HD as well as FTA channnels?

If yes, what other equipment would I need to get in order to make this work?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Regardless of which front end you go for, i've heard of driver instability for some card readers. Be carefull which one you buy or, go the safe option and get a dreambox.

The solution I linked to can be used with MP should you wish to go that way.

Monty is right, I had to run oscam as a service otherwise it didn't work after standby.

I would prefer a straight PC route without any extra boxes but if stability is an issue with external readers, then maybe the Dreambox would be the better option...I will have to look at both in a bit more detail then decide which would be the best way forward for my set up. Thanks again for pointing me in right direction & the links to both guides.

You guys rock!!

robbo, would you mind giving us a quick run through of your set up?

Also, do you still have to put the card back into your sky box every now and then?

Edit; sorry I just saw your link!

Wolvers - Hopefully the link has all you need, but if you want more detail please PM me with some questions.

I have always had to put the card back in the sky box, but recently I have amended the settings and I am reliably informed that this change will mean that I don't have to anymore (see my recent edit to the linked post with the changes in red). My entitlements are about 3 weeks away from expiring, so I am on the cusp of expecting an update - so time will tell.

Only got Freesat from sky now but using OSCAM and my omnikey 3121 under XP all works great. standby is fine and entitlements update (as long as the misses watches enough FIVE HD/5 USA...)
Old sky box is a distant memory now :)

Is there a particular DVB-S card that works best with the omnikey? A dual tuner one I would assume?

Just out of curiosity, whats FIVE HD/5 USA got to do with it?

Also, any chance you can share your settings? If this is now stable, I would be happy to do the USB reader method and free up a power socket :smashin: Has to be 100% though as the Dreambox "just works".

Using MediaPortal it shouldn't make any difference, as long as it works with MediaPortal (i.e. is has BDA drivers), it will work using the guide linked above.

Sky transmit a number of channels which require a white sky card to be plugged into the sky box to view, namely 5 USA, 5 USA+1, 5*, 5*+1 and 5HD. These are not available from normal freesat and are encrypted. You don't actually need to have a subscription from sky to watch these channels, but the viewing card must be valid, and it does need to refresh it's entitlements every 50 days or so. Jameson and I both have this setup - i.e. we don't actually have a sky subscription, but use this technique to get 5HD (they do have some good films in full HD with DTS sound - I am not addicted to Neighbours like Jameson's wife ).

Don't worry though, this will work for full sky subscription too as the principle is identical.

I have already shared it - see post 3 of this thread for the link. I am using the Omnikey USB card reader (which you can get off Ebay for about £8, so even if it doesn't work it won't cost you much to try).

OSCAM will transmit on newcamd to multiple users on the network, so if you have a PC with 10 tuner card in it, each will be able to use the entitlements simultaneously. Equally, if you have 10 PCs each with one tuner, it will work.

Thank you very much for the detailed post!

£8, not too expensive even if it goes in the bin :smashin:

Sorry, i thought you had done some additional tweaking and thats why I thought there was more to it than your post linked in post 3. :)

I'll order an Omni Key now then :D

This is 100% stable for me but I know others have had issues. I am using XP which I think plays a part (it is the card reader drivers which seem to be problematic for some)

I got this setup as an experiment but has been surprisingly rock solid

Thanks guys, omni key ordered. Cost a tenner so even if it goes straight into the bin, its no great loss

wish i had not read this thread do i really want to start this :lesson: and break something else hmmm

You love it! :)

I have got this working on XP SP3 and on another PC for someone else with Windows 7. Both are rock solid, although I have to do quite a lot of testing with different version of OSCAM with the Windows 7 setup to get it to work. I will try to find out the working version for Windows 7 if people are interested.

Yes please, its the O/S i'm using.

OSCAM does work under win 7 - my problem that I had with the omnikey, was related to usb drivers, not just after resume from sleep, but also when starting from cold...

I tried an Infinity USB SMART, and once I got it off the ground it was working great... my new problem was that having 6 tuners, all the OSCAM executables were killing the pc. Even though my dvb-t tuners shouldn't have used oscam.... for some reason there were 6 instances running.

I keep falling back to the dreambox/technomate approach, as it just works now....

Thanks Tony, i thought yours were more than just sleep issues but wasn't sure. I've ordered an OSCAM and if it goes in the bin, its no great deal... at a tenner I call it disposable.

You say the after Infinity, OSCAM killed your system, in which way? Was it a memory leak where it just ate more and more ram or cpu hungry? I run an 8gb I3 so I hope I should have MORE than enough power if its a CPU issue, memory leak though, thats obviously a diferent story.

edit: You also mention that it affected your T tuners, did it not affect the S2's? I don't run T's so if thats all it is, that would be a winner for me! (Could you link please?)

Does it work in 7MC?

It should work fine as long as you use DVBLogic TVSource. I'm waiting for mine to be delivered and can tell you in a day or two. Caveat though - read Tony Parks post just above.

Those instructions are far from easy to follow and I've realised its missed steps so, anyway, i've had a go but get encrypted message.
