they advertise this as having prem footbal, guiness rugby YAWnien and other stuff ,,, when you look at the planner for the sports HD channel it displays what is on sky sports 1.

so when it starts to broadcast is this what we will see or will it be a hd broadscast with loads of sd stuff in between

im a rugby league fan my self and would love to see this in HD

It'll try and show HD Sports where available but it will still need to pad this out with SD, possibly upconverted otherwise there would only be a few hours of coverage a week. I'd expect to see lots of repeats as well.

HD Sports will be a mixture of the content currently shown across the 4 SS channels, exactly what this will be is unknown so I suspect just using the SS1 listings to populate the EPG is an easy option.

There is certainly a lot of HD sports content but if you look at the 4 SS channels there is stuff that won't be filmed in HD, this of course may not even make it to the merged HD channel but if it did then upscaled at source will still look better than standard SD.

Sky are usually pretty good at not overlapping live coverage of key sports. Even the rugby usually doesn't overlap with the football. Cricket will be a problem though in September.

Sky have said that when major events like Cricket and Football overlap they will show one of the events on another channel. I assume that will be one of the movie channels as they start at 5.30

they had WWE on the HD channel the other night...i do so hope this is broadcast in proper HD and not just upconverted SD....heh

(sorry, i dont watch most other sports as i'd rather be playing them tbh, but the WWE is a good laugh with dinner and a couple bottles of wine or whatever....lol)

Bizzare sporting entertainment.

The WWE is like a drug, I can go wthout it for a couple of years then get hooked and watch it religiously for a few months then go cold turkey again:)

I'm sorry guys but a dozen or so steroid blown up idiots wearing spandex is not a sport!:suicide: Thankfully when the cricket or the golf or boxing or any football even darts or pool is on we won't be seeing those idiots taking up valuable HD viewing time!!

I can watch 2 FTA German HD channels (Pro7 HD and Sat1 HD) and they show upscaled SD material most of the day with their films in true HD.

I have the channels sat next to each other in the sat listings together with their SD counterparts. Switching from SD to HD is a revelation - their upscaled material is much better. Even the US imports look good upscaled - Die SImpsons last night looked magic.

So if Sky use a similar system at least our normal programming will look good.

Thats really good news actually! Proper upscaling at source is as close to HD without the limited material - good stuff!

In another thread on films upscaled looking better because they were originally shot in 35mm, do you think that most sport prgramme shot today for SD broadcast originally come in a higher res format although not true HD something in between perhaps
Dave

Well the US import stuff I've seen (comedy, soaps and such) on Sat1 HD and Pro7 HD were probably on videotape. I suppose because the HD channel bitrate is high, coupled with the upscaled content, the pictures really sparkle.

A few of the films I've dipped into also look nice - but not really any better than the TV progs. Live studio stuff does seem even better - a raw feed presumably.

I haven't watched any of their films in true HD yet as I forget to note them down!

The demo channels for Sky Italia and TPS France are stunning in HD. Phew!

I have a friend who works for BT providing the broadcast links between various places and sky. We were talking about Hd he said not all their fibre uplink trucks are hd ready yet and a bigger problem being that Visions who provide most OB facilities for Sky's coverage of premiership are not fully ready yet to cover every match in hd. It will only be the main picture in Hd all interactive options will be sd due to data transmission problems
The demo they gave to the press Chelsea vs Charlton I believe they had to get Telegenic in to provide facilities to show it off and they only have three specialist hd units. All the Premiership rugby has been produced and broadcast in Hd since start of season you just need to know how to view it plus have correct equipment. All the matches showed have been archived in hd for season end play offs and possibility of english club in european cup final
As far as he is aware the initial sport will be
Premiership Football (Visions/Carlton 021)
Guinness Premiership Rugby Union(Telegenic)
Super League(Telegenic)
Elite League Speedway(Scanners/Aviva)
Domestic Cricket(Ctv) Due May/June
Greyhounds (Arena )
Possibly the the weekly darts/snooker programme (Arena)
