After much soul searching with Sky help desk,
(Dolby digital,oops !what's that! No it's not
a Space Rocket),I turned to Sony UK for an answer :
Thank you for your recent E-Mail

Unfortunately, you will not be able to receive Dolby Digital 5.1 through
your Sony set top box. Nor are Sony/Sky able to upgrade this for you.

I am sorry for any disappointment this may cause.
With regards
Nick Black
For and on behalf of
Sony United Kingdom Ltd

    I am really PSSSSSS........FFF,considering I paid
a dealer £50 to aquire the box because it had
Digital audio Out whilst I could have had a
digibox for free!!!

I'd wait and see if I were you. I had a Sony box & was told that I could not use the optical output as it was disabled, but lo & behold when I connected it to my amp (Denon) I was getting a digital signal which the amp coverted to Dolby Pro Logic.

Also, I wonder whether the Sony guy meant you could not 5.1 direct from the digibox, maybe when Sky do transmit in 5.1 the Sony box will send a raw digital 5.1 signal to your amp.

I suspect that you will *not* be able to decode Dolby Digital 5.1 via the Sony box even if it does have a digital optical output. Sky have got to have a carrot to persuade us all to buy the SkyPlus system. I also suspect that manufacturers might (with Sky's strict blessing) offer ordinary boxes which can decode and output DD 5.1, but these will not come under the 'free' offer. Just my opinion for what it's worth.

    Regards

    Rash,

I wouldnt worry about it too much, even if our Sony boxes will not output DD 5.1, they will have a good resale value to people in other countries.

I can see quite a few Sony boxes leaving the country in a few months, as many people here upgrade to Sky+

I have since read in September's What Satellite that Pace have developed a plug in module which will give Dolby Digital compatiability and an optical digital output.

It will slot into the PCMCIA data port which is currently covered by a blanking plate on the back of the Digibox.

Sky will not market this unless there shows to be a high demand.

Problem is that there is still too much misinformation and misunderstanding to be sure if you can or cannot get DD5.1 from the Sony.

The response from Sony could be read in different ways. It does not say whether it cannot output 5.1 as it is unable to do so in the hardware or because there are no 5.1 broadcasts on skyd at present.

As mentioned already, there is a difference between passing the signal to an amp to decode and decoding on the box itself. We already know there isnt a decoder on the sony digibox but the response didn't make that clear either.
