Hi. I am coming to the end of my Subscription year that i had when i purchased my Digi box recorder.

I have now decided to knock Sky on the head due to personal reasons. Work..etc.

What's really annoyed me is the fact that this box is now defunct..I cant use it for anything but watching the free Gumpff. I cannot record with it because i no longer subscribe..OK. I should of read the small print.. :( But what an absolute waste not being able to access things i recorded last year. Sky really do have you by the ball's on this 1 dont they. Unless anyone out there knows better then i think its gonna have to go. Great shame as it works brilliantly. But do Sky really own the contents of your recordings on yer hard drive??????

    Cheers.....

    Hi,

I empathise with you....but I don't REALLY think you can blame SKY. After all it is in the paper work, a fairly common discussion point and common knowledge to Subscribers.

Would you blame your Bank if you had not read the termination clauses on your mortgage. Personally I don't think so, but there you go.

I only write this because this is a fairly common comment in this forum and it is getting a bit tired.

Personally I find the technical faults/fixes MORE interesting

    Regards

The content on your hard drive is encrypted so you not only need a SKY+ sub to access it but a SKY sub to decode it, SKY are not going to leave the STB with the ability to permenantly decode content with payment or not.

If you had the SKY+ sub you could still access the FTA and FTV recordings of course but at the end of the day SKY+ should never be considered as an archieve tool just a bloody good caching system:)

Have to agree with Starburst here, Sky+ is absolutely brilliant at what it is designed for - ie a way to record/watch and then delete or archive onto another system. The fact that you can record 2 programs whilst watching another recorded program from the hard disk still amazes me.
If there's ever any stuff I want to keep (surprisingly rare!) I just copy it across to the hard disk of my Panasonic DVD recorder.

As you have to buy the SKY+ box why do you have to pay a subscription?

What extra do you get for your £10 a month?

The SKY+ hardware and the SKY+ service are two seperate entities.
You can buy the STB from SKY or anyother source and use it as a more or less standard digibox with the addition of an optical audio output and s-video.
However to access the recording systems (dual tuners, live pause) you have to subscribe to the SKY+ service which is £10 a month or have an appropriate SKY channel package which includes the SKY+ sub (basically any two SKY Premium channels).

You have to pay a tenner a month for the SKY+ service IF you don't subscribe to a channel package which includes the service and want to make full use of the product.
I guess you were on SKYworld or SKYsports/movie world package?

You get the schedule transmissions which enable the box to work. If you buy a car, you still have to pay road tax.

Thank you Starburst and Nick UK for your replies but if I bought the Sky+ STB, with it's two tuners and recorded one program whilst watching a second, when I did watch the recording I would only be watching one program at time, not like a second room setup, which would cost £10 extra. I have Sky now and as part of that service I get the schedule which comes out of the normal subscription.

I still wonder what the £10 is for.

The Sky+ box doesn't work like a VCR. There's no timers inside it. The fact that it knows which tuner to use on which channel and when is all set up by signals sent out by Sky. Of course you can see a daily EPG on Sky, but the Sky+ box uses more than that. You can't do anything on the Sky+ box without Sky supplying the data to make it operate.

If you are talking from the technical angle then there is very little the subscription buys, maybe a few specific SKY+ CS reps and for a very short time PACE got a cut of all subscription revenue in return for selling the units cheaper to SKY.

Bottom line though, SKY exist to make money.
There only real product is digital TV with a few ancillary services which are tied to the main product so to answer your question at the most fundemental level.....
The £10 a month is to fund SKY and generate the revenue needed to operate, invest in R&D and most of all to meet the demands of both corporate and private shareholders.
In this regard it is not different from the basic channel package costs, multiroom, skybuy, skytalk etc etc all of which generate revenue which makes SKY a viable operation.

    Indeed.
SKY+ without a subscription channel package is a might expensive if you have the option of good reliable DTT coverage.
However I am still waiting for a Freeview DVR type device to launch which captures my imagination like SKY+ did and of course doesn't fill up the DS forums with complaints about buggy software and hardware issues:)
Had high hopes for the Panasonic but that isn't being received well and the Topfield is a might expensive for what it is but it's the only one that I would even consider buying tomorrow if I had too.

    Thanks again Starburst and Nick_UK.

In my heart of hearts I know that is the basic answer and in the end I will have to bite the bullet, probably having the extra premium channels to defray the cost.

thanks chaps. i'm definately getting rid after reading your postings. Sky have had enough of my money over the years.

What i do find sad is though are replies like that of Nick uk. He sounds like the sort of person who would pay Sky whatever they asked for their overpriced fodder.

I paid £250 for this box of tricks..And lets face it. Its just a Pace reciever with a Hard drive built in. The Magic..??? is done by the signal to the LNB..The fact is though. I paid £250 for a box i can no longer use.

A friend of mine has the full monty in Sky packages...I joked to him the other day that what you pay Sky a month for overated crap.. You could by a new car with. (Monthly). repayment. He agreed...Its out of hand what Sky charge peeps. I think you should all take stock of what you actually pay Sky for.

As i see it. The odd Live footy match is all its good for...The rest. Repeats..Repeats...Repeats..Then more repeats..and then some repeats of the 70's..80's..90's...Films just go round in Circles...???

Get out and support yer local footy team..(Season ticket). Go and take the kidz to the Cinema..Get out of the house and breathe the air. Stop giving Sky a percentage of yer wages.

Iv'e been Frank..Thank you for your replies. All joking aside. You have been very helpful.

Time to unplug...Ebay here i come..

Wow ! A couple of postings and you know all about me ?

Nobody's twisting your arm to subscribe to Sky. I subscribe to Sky+ because I'm fortunate enough to be able to afford it, and it gives me what I want. Just because I'm not one of the (ever growing) "I want everything, but I don't want to pay anything for it" brigade, there is no need to launch personal attacks.

There are lots and lots of things in this life that I can't afford, so I don't buy them. Simple as that. But I don't attack those that do. Go out and buy a Freeview box, and see what you're missing.

I too don't begrudge paying for Sky+ as it's so good. I don't pay for monthly subscriptions to a mobile phone company (which I believe is a total rip-off) so I can have something like Sky+ which is brilliant. Before you ask, no I don't work for Sky ;)

Sorry Nick UK..A little naughty of me. No personal attack meant. I suppose i have just seen the light thats all.

Just out of interest...But how many people given an ultimatum would choose the Internet over Sky. I currently have an always on Connection Broadband package from which i also run an XBox with XBox LIVE. I personally would choose BB any day as you get something out of it. Live entertainment and limitless downlods of Music etc. For as little as £20 a month.
Sky charge £41 a month for their top package....?Repeats..Out of date T.V. progs..i.e. Property ladder. An endless circle of film fodder on numerous chanels. Lets not mention the Bid up rubbish and endless advert slots. Lets be honest you pay over the odds for out of date TV. Ought to be watch by dates on most of Sky's rubbish.

    Thanks again.

    Toodle pip....

Interesting that you consider sky a rip off, but are happy to subscribe to xbox live. Why not just invite friends round to play xbox with you - then you wouldn't have to pay for it?!

It's all relative - you pay for what you consider valuable to you. I have an xbox and don't pay microsoft a fee because I think it's a rip off. You think sky is a rip off. Fair enough, but I think it's a little niave of you to think that because you think something is a rip off everybody else should too.

Interacting with people all over the world and competing against them..A rip off..???Maybe fella. £32 a year subscription to Microsoft. I would say that was bloody good value bud. I have friends all over the globe since becoming part of XBox Live. I have had many invites to visit Live members for free stay holidays in many destinations to which i am considering at the moment.

Damn well right i consider Sky a rip off. :thumbsdow I dont care what you think chummy. You just cant see life without yer Box..Do yourself a favour..Cut the cable...

    Enough said.... :hiya:

I think you are forgetting that Sky only provide the method of delivery, and (apart from the Sky News and sports channels) don't have any control over the content of what they provide.

Strange that you only think Sky is a rip-off when you can't afford it. I don't think you've "seen the light" - what I think you are seeing is sour grapes. We all have a choice of what we spend our money on - I think it's better to pay Sky £30-odd pounds a month for Sky TV, than to spend 4 times that on cigarettes, which lots of people do.

Now, that would be a good reason to pull the plug ! :)

Eastenders is the dreariest soap on the box. Real East End people are not like that. They are happy friendly people, not forever at each other's throats, as portrayed on Eastenders. In any case, there aren't any East Enders in the East End any more - they all moved out to Basildon & Harlow years ago :smashin:

As for Corrie, I haven't watched it since they days of Ena Sharples

Wow Gooner, you really are one the most annoying people I have ever come across on these forums, you gave an opinion, someone gave theirs and you then decide to point out what idiots they are for their view!

What is £40 a month for something? You can spend that on one round on a Friday night!
I don't watch a lot of TV, but I have what I want to watch and when I want to watch it, and it's on tap, to me that is well worth £40.
But then I waste money all over the place, I have a property that is far too big for the three of us, we have two cars that we don't really need and we tend to socialise far more than necessary, so again we are throwing money away, and why? Because we want to enjoy ourselves, tomorrow I may not be able to afford it and I may not have a TV at all, but while I can I will.
