How fantastic to see the JVC HDS1 hard disk video recorder in this months HCC. Hopefully we will see more of these devices appearing over the next few months and the prices falling. Personnaly I will be buying one of these rather than giving Sky £10 more of my money every month for the pleasure of owning a fancy video recorder (+ the £300 box + £50 install!). I know that you won't get direct interaction with the EPG and it won't automatically record your favorite series but I can live without these. Lets hope these will give sky+ enough competition to drop the unfair £10 month sub.

The HDS1 does indeed look a nice piece of hardware but comparing it to SKY+ is a bit of a mistake. If people are complaining about a £10 month sub for a product which allows you to watch a digital channel and record another they are hardly going to praise a £1000 device can only record the output of a seperate digibox.
Well there is one guy who does
I guess it all depends upon your needs, I want a replacement for my first gen Pace box and the ability to output two seperate decoded digital channels, SKY+ can't do this but at least I won't miss a program because I'm watching the footy..

I agree SimonL. I think both Sky+ and TIVO will have a very very limited market. Most people will not pay the absurd £10 monthly sub. If they only charged say the price of a monthly tv guide then that would be fair enough. But £10 a month is a disgrace.

I think more vcr makers will be rolling out Hard drive recorders either stand alone or combination machines. That should give the above two a run for their money. And it will be about time too.
