Is it possible to record films or programmes using the sky+ box and then transfer them onto the hard drive on my computer for the purpose of burning them onto disc?

Not in the manner you want:)
You can only do this by connecting the analogue video/audio outputs of the SKY+ to a PC capture card or using a DVD recorder to create a portable copy.
If you have a v1 SKY+ then a SDI mod will do the same but at higher quality.

The reason you can't do this is because the data is stored on the drive in encrypted format, and can only be played back through the decoder in the Sky+ box.
