Sky+ recording (and live) "stuttering" - but only on one channel...

A peculiar Sky+ problem cropped up this evening. I was recording a programme on Channel 4, and while idling channel-hopping around chanced to catch a glimpse of the show. The programme - live, not the recording played back - was stuttering: momentary freezes in picture and sound which occurred every few seconds. All other channels were fine.

When I checked the recording, I found that it was the same.

Since then, I've been doing some testing. This is what I found:

Firstly, this is only happening on Channel 4. I haven't tried every other channel, but the ones I have tried are unnaffected.

Secondly, the "live" stuttering only happens if I'm simultaneously recording the channel. If I cancel the recording, the live channel immediately starts behaving perfectly normally.

Thirdly, the signal strength and lock on both inputs is fine.

This strikes me as a very odd phenomenon. has anyone else experienced it?

I have certainly read about reception problems only affecting CH4 before but never with the added twist of the problem only being visible while recording the channel as well.
Dual recording atm otherwise I would have a look on my system:)

    Thanks for the reply.

It is odd, isn't it. I just tried recording Channel 4 and Bravo simultaneously and flicking live from one to the other. The Ch4 signal continued to break up, while Bravo was perfect.

I suppose if it persists I'll have to give Sky a ring.

Thanks for the thought. There was no rain or high wind or anything extreme at all.

    Jim,

Ah, so it's not just me; thanks. I've no idea if this is relevant, but what make is your receiver? Mine is an Amstrad version 2.

I had sound dropouts while watching The Ring (DD5.1) on Sky Movies 2 last night. Several 3 sec dropouts throughout the movie. Weather fine. I have Pace Sky+ box, not recording anything on other channel.

    Bert,

I had problems with drop out and sound stuttering, on both my SKY+ boxes, especially in heavy rain. I had the dish re aligned, and the reception and quality are now increased from about 55% to 65%+, and the problem has disappeared. You do not say where you live, the further North from London, the more varied the signal, another option is to by a larger dish and better quality LNB. Maplin sells an alignment kit including compass for £45.00., which is about the same as an aerial company would charge to align the dish.

Well everything seems fine right now (14:55) and if there had been a weather issue than you would probably have lost more than one single channel.
Pity no one was watching CH4 last night to confirm if there was transponder or uplink problems with the channel and not just your own hardware acting up.

Thanks to everyone for their contributions. Today (Wednesday) everything is fine again. Perhaps it was just a temporary fault with Ch4's transmission, though I don't see how that could explain the live signal being affected by the recording.

Barry, my signal test meters show strength at 100% on both inputs, and quality at about 70% on input one and 80% on input two.

    Thanks again to all.
