Yes! And they are ignoring it.
Perspective is , as you SO rightly say , is absolutely key.
So let’s look at that. Most people looking at Q that i meat ask is it better than plus. So they are mostly existing customers. And as the title of this thread the perspective is, v sky plus.
From sky’s POV they want to sell Q, what’s the best way to do that? Well stop selling sky plus for one. So what’s the choice? Q and that’s it. So why bother ? they aren’t trying to get market share in great chunks like they where with plus.
And they want new customers. Big carrots for them. Existing customers get very little in my experience. It’s a stick up I’m afraid as said earlier it was almost impossible to see what uhd content was available.
Why do people think that announcing, with great glee and delight, that we are “delighted to announce the arrival of hdr....” years after the completion, that that is a good thing? Why? It’s not good? They are years behind the competition. Years! Netflix had acres of hdr content. Sky give 3 docs as a fanfare and you think a further 30odd films is snorting to behold? Really? Now if this was happening two years ago maybe. And as I sit here Ally Mcoist has gone under water again. Btw!
So do you want Q?
As an existing plus owner/No uhd tv then no obviously. Defo stick with plus it’s far easier to use.
If you do have a uhd tv then it’s still debatable. If your tv is good it will upscale better than q will give you uhd. The improvement in uhd simply isn’t worth the agro. And by agro I mean hours on the sky phone system trying to get a human to answer your questions. To agree a contract. To agree an install date. And once installed after months waiting your back on the phone diagnosing faults and a re visit date, and that’s if they fix it. If they don’t, repeat the whole system again.
I haven’t mentioned though, that your only aloud one uhd input to the property. Only the main tv is aloud uhd. One. One uhd tv. If you have an annex. Tough luck, one uhd subscription per address. A cinema. Forget it. Two uhd TVs. One in the bedroom maybe, not allowed. Mini box only. And the lag on the minis is poor.
It may be that an update has allowed updates to be installed more efficiently, as q14 has arrived on my box now. I didn’t have to faf around doing it manually. However the box was several updates behind a couple of months ago until I switched it off.
It’s interesting you choose to pick up on that, but ignore the fact the minis don’t work if the main box switches off in eco mode. And who orders a mini box you can’t use when ever you want? Dont you remember the adverts ? Pause and pick up recordings where ever you want. Provided you switch off the other box first. Really? Are you sure?
It may not bother you. But you think it’s ok to sell a product on that premis? Here’s sky Q. Uhd( a waters down uhd spec) DD+ ( with impossible lip sync issues and random drop outs) . Pick up and leave recording where ever you want( but you have to switch one box off before you can watch it on another if you want more than 2 mini boxes) . Record 6 things at once. ( well that’s good but why do I need that when everything is available on demand now?)
One thing I do like, the mini tv is also available in the info banner or whatever it’s called at the bottom of the screen, if you choose max 5 recordings. That works well.
Put it this way, if there’s a movie on sky I want to watch, I’ll check every other platform and watch it on there first any day of the week. Netflix on the tv app is far better quality than Q in any format.
Sky need to make sure they keep the sports on sky over their competitors or they really are in trouble.
I’d also suggest they need to look at internet only based tv service and drop the hardware altogether. Before the fire stick generation swallow them up entirely
