    Hi all,

can anyone shed some light on this. I've noticed whilst watching the Euro footie that the picture is fairly poor from my new Sky+ box. The picture looks very blocky at times, and when watching players with the ball when the camera is viewing the general play i can't make out who the hell has it!! (fairly poor seeing as i'm watching it on a 32" widescreen TV) I've looked at my signal strength and there's a 1 and a 2 section – the 1 from what i can remember has two bars, the first is at about 75% and other 60 - 65%.
The 2nd ones are about the same. Does this mean i'm getting a crap signal from my dish, and is there anything i can do about it?

Any advice will be very welcome.

    Cheers

Which channel are you watching on - apparantly the ITV pictures on satellite are appalling whereas the BBC picture quality is far better.
Probably due to useless bit rates being used by ITV to save money.

yeah, funny enough it was the footbal on ITV. Perhaps that's all it is. I'll check the next game on BBC and see how that is.

I was gonna post exatcly this. I have a sky+ pace V2 box which i got a week ago, and i also got a new sony KV28FQ70s so i wasnt sure what was causing the problem. But on ITV the picture quality for football is disgracefull. I even wne tto the expense of buying quality THOR scart leads and have RGB enabled etc. There is a fuzz round all the players and close ups are very blocky as you said. Ive got the france game on BBC1 on as we speak, and it is a little better that ITV but still poor. I think its just cos im used to watching football through my aerial which gives a lot better PQ than sky who compress certain channels some channels more than others ive heard. Realy dissapointed though. Dont think 100hz tv's are too good for football either apparently so maybe thats contributing.

P.s my signal strenth is as follows. Unput 1 strength about 60%, inpout 1 quality about 70%. Input 2 signal and quality both about 70%

SKY has no control over the pictures the BBC and ITV broadcast via digital satellite, it's entirely upto the broadcasters themselves what sort of quality they think is acceptable to the viewer. Alas the equation is simple, the higher the quality the more money it costs:(

It is a shame that such a huge event drawing very good audience figures and used to sell w/s tellies has such terrible presentation.
It has really shown how bad the use of stat muxing on the BBC and ITV transponders can be when they are all showing the same program and are starved of bandwidth.

I wonder how many people have blamed their televisions and/or digital platform in the belief that it couldn't be down to the BBC or ITV who have had decades of experience providing quality broadcasts!

    I agree completely.

The picture quality of many channels (including ITV) on Sky & Freeview is terrible.

Bandwidth (and money) shouldn't be an issue, the broadcasters are lifting our legs, so to speak.

It's about time we made a fuss about this. Maybe another 'Red dot' type issue?

    Any thoughts?

Watched the footie last night on ITV through my SKY+ on my new Panny plamsa and was absolutely gutted. PQ was appalling!!

If it is on Eurosport I advise to watch in on there as the PQ is so much better. Think everyone should try and contact ITV to complain!!

definately worth complaining about. You would think out of all the satellite channels you receive the two that would be the best would be ITV and BBC!!

So, who do we complain to then?

I think Sky have missed out here, they should have done a ppv for the England matches and shown the BBC and ITV how to broadcast 1) a decent bit rate, and 2) how to do interactive football.

I'd rather pay than watch ITVs coverage.

    Got a reply from ITV

Thank you for your recent email and we are sorry to hear of your concerns
    with recent presentations.

ITV is constantly evaluating and monitoring our services and have worked to
look at improving our transmissions since the start of Euro 2004. These
amendments are now in place, and we are also looking at additional advances
in technology to further improve future broadcasts.

Be assured that you concerns will be highlighted to the relevant
controllers and transmission teams via our daily report to the company, and
thank you for your interest in our services.

    Kind regards,

    ITV Duty Office

Well I wonder if I will see any improvement in picture quality. Sky have not even bothered to reply. Guess my £40 per month doesn't count for much!!

    Well done Parklife!

Who did you send the emial to at ITV and Sky? Worth a few people sending emails to complain – more people complaining about it, the more likely they are to do something about it.

I have noticed that the studio pictures broadcast by both ITV and BBC are very good - so is it the Portugese television production that is at fault - assuming that they do the live broadcasts and farm it out to all the other broadcasters ?

The pictures also appear better for the evening games with no bright sun.

Studio shots are generally full of static images which compress down very efficently which makes it much easier for a single transponder to carry upto 8 channels using stat muxing to spread the load.
Football has almost no static images, everything is always in motion especially when you take into account the huge amount of detail in the grass alone, this means that compression is very difficult when you have a less than optimum bitrate to work with.

The ITV pictures are astoundingly poor - both the game and the studio work.
I watch the ITV games on analogue terrestrial instead of the rubbish they give Sky.

Apparently the ITV pics on Cable are good though.

I noticed this problem too on ITV.
That and the EXTRA LARGE red dot box.
I thought it was the machine and tried the pause and play to get rid of the red dot box and see if the problem was sorted.
    Unfortunately it didnt.

My council TV picture is crap so I really rely on my sky. I phoned my Dad and he has a normal Sky box not a sky+ and he had the same problem. So its not the equipment

I watched the England game on the Beeb yesterday (yes an unusual occurance for a Scot) and i didnt notice any problems with that.

I think ITV are trying to keep costs down and not using all their feed bandwidth.

Its annoying when you spend a fortune on AV equipment to get a ****e Picture from a broadcaster.

I too have reverted to analogue to watch footie as freeview pq is appalling through Thomson STB. I think it must be freeviwe bit rates as looks great on digital cable at my brothers.
