I have a SKY+ box at the moment only working as a standard digibox due to normal installation problems (3 attempts and about 40 phone calls so far). I am concerned that there is a constant noise from the box whether on or in standby, not sure if it is fan noise, hard disk or other!! Has any one else experienced this?

Yes its the hard disk being spun all the time to increase its lifetime as apparently ramping up and down (like a in a PC) is bad. TIVO does this.

It's the fan. When mine was installed I asked the engineer to check. He called Sky and they admitted it was the fan. The stupid thing is that it stays on even when the box is on standby - I guess it records at any time....

    Gary
Have you checked to see if the fan is running?
The reason I ask is that my fan never seems to run.I not sure if it's broken. The box hums and gets quite warm even when it's been on standby all night.
I would appreciate it if you could confirm if you fan is spinning and is it going all the time?
Thanks
Simon

The noise is the hard disk spinning and the fan only kicks in at internal temperature of 48 degs.celsius
