Since Friday, I have noticed a huge difference in picture quality on the Sky HD channels..........

Sky Sports 1 HD - Cricket looked great
Sky Sports 2 HD - Championship Football was impressive
Sky Movies 9 & 10 HD - Kingdom of Heaven and Van Helsing are amazing

Has anyone else noticed this........more bandwidth maybe?

Well impressed, as I have been a Sky HD subscriber from the beginning and only now due I really appreciate the extra quality available from a HD source.

    Regards,
    Jez

i think you are on your own on this one ! most other people(myself included) thought it was poor when compared to the bbc's wc coverage.

Judging by some of the other threads on this forum, it appears that the opinion of Sky HD picture quality is generally poor.......I admit I too at first agreed.....but the last 2 days have been different.....at least for me :)

I would say that the brightness of the picture was slightly more than usual, but apart from that it was certainly of a high standard.

BBC World Cup quality was superb and sets the standard I guess.

I watched Luton v Leicester and agree that the PQ was top notch. The cricket on HD 1 was quality as usual.

Come on the Premiership and Prem Plus - starting with the champions being dismantled on the opening day, at home, in HD!! :lease:

What little I saw of the football earlier looked pretty impressive to me. I was fortunate enough to have my HD installed to see the World Cup, so I can't compare to that.

I'd happily pay a bigger SKY HD sub for this to happen! :)

This is where SKY HD is going to come into its own for me - with a prem plus sub as well as the other matches SKY HD and football is going to be amazing this year - now I just need to teach my 7 week old son to sleep soundly when I'm shouting at the TV :lesson:

Some of it was but not all although how much of that was the BBC's fault is unknown and how much experimenting was going on may have been another factor.

would not most of the b.b.c.'s coverage be down to the German tv companies who were transmitting the coverage, only the studio coverage would be down to the B.B.C. !!!

Do you guys think that maybe the picture quality has been lowered to get the 5.1 sound in? It would make sense to me.

Personally I'd easily settle for 4.0 sound (ala Wimbledon) or even 2.0 if the picture quality was near the standard set by BBCHD's World Cup games.

I assume that BBC would decide their own bit-rates for transmission, which seems to be as important as resolution. From memory the BBC WC games did vary in quaility and the very first one was one of the best that i saw.

That could obviously be down to the BBC varying bit rates (it is a technical trial after all) or the German source, or maybe both.

For me the nature doc's, although not my fave type of show, give more of that wow factor that the footy. :)

Depends how much (if any) re-encoding was going on to make allowances for any differences in the HD feeds the BBC were receiving and what was being broadcast to the UK via their own transponder.

I doubt the BBC were just piping the HD feed straight out again untouched and the whole service is a trial and you can only trial on real material both live and pre-recorded.

Either way like I said the BBC HD games were not all perfect.

    I wouldn't think so.
A DD5.1 stream is 384kbps or maybe 444kbps so that "smalL" over head is nothing compared to a video bitstream of around 18Mbps (even using mpeg4) which SKY's cricket was running at during the 20/20 games which would be prettys similar to the BBC's bitrates.

I have wondered if the more "compact" nature of English footy stadiums may have an effect, more close up and rapid movement compared to the German stadiums with their long distance camera shots.
    Probably way off the mark:)
