Any updates from Sky? rumours, anything?

the latest issue of some random AV mag had an editorial column about HD and the BBC, with a brief snippit saying he thought SkyHD would be late 2006.

I've registered on the Sky website to be updated or notified with any news as it becomes available.
Unfortunately, haven't heard a word from them yet.

As with everyone I'm hoping it's gonna be sooner rather than later, but the only conrete thing I've heard from Sky is '2006', and that could mean anything.

I registered for info within the first few days of the site going live and have not heard anything either, and I check the site every so often.

All indications still point to early 2006 I can't wait just hope its not too expensive.

Well they seem to be on schedule - the new complex in West London appears to be being kitted out on time and HD tests in DVB-S2/H2.264 have started on the Astra 28.2 bird.

Shortages of the chipsets needed for new SkyHD+ box seem to be the main stumbling block - however once German Premiere starts this winter (using same stuff as Sky) we may see something near Christmas I hope. News Corp is a stakeholder in Premiere ....

Don't know about Premiere - but NewsCorp is a shareholder in DirecTV in the US, who are moving to MPEG4 and DVB-S2 for some of their HD services starting in November.

My understanding is that retailers will start to be equipped with demo units for end of this month early Sept in order to let the public see what's possible.....and to start signing them up.....Not been told anything to the contrary yet...but haven't spoken to my spies for 14 days and 40 respectively

    :)

Well it's long been rumoured that there were plans for a partial launch this year even before James announced a "nationwide" early 2006 launch.
Of course even if I was a tester or worked for Thomson with a SKY+ HD in my hands I still wouldn't feel confident enough to go onto a public former and make such a definitive statement, but that's just me being overly cautious and not wanting to look like a prat:)

I sincerely hope you are right, can't get my HD fix via NTL anymore:(

Taken from a SKY press release...

"Sky plans to launch Europe’s most comprehensive high definition television service (“HDTV”) in the first half of calendar year 2006."

    Full release here in pdf.

Of course everything is subject to change:)

Public launch is scheduled for Feb 2006. This is highly dependant upon the customer systems in the background, the technical systems are ready to go virtually anytime.

There may be a soft launch before Xmas, but it won't be to the public.

Slightly off topic, but I'm assuming there'll not be any need to change dish? Ours is a shared one for all the flats here.

No - Sky dishes currently working should continue to work with HD. They aren't expecting people to fit a second dish or twin LNB bracket, and need to point at the existing Sky satellites for the SD services. The frequency bands will be the same as now - they aren't moving out of the Ku band. (Though in the US DirecTV are moving some stuff into Ka band I believe?)

However, anyone moving from standard Sky Digital box to Sky HD+ box will need the second LNB to get the full Sky+ functionlity? Those with current Sky+ should not be affected.

    H

Yes - absolutely. There were rumours that Sky may start fitting Octo rather than Quad LNBs, to allow for more than two Sky+s or more than one Sky+ and two multi-rooms, though I don't know if this is true or not...

    hi,

going on the fact that sky are now pre registering their services,in the normal world, does this not tell you that you are not going to have wait several months to see a start of this service in your home ?

Not at all.. it tells you nothing about the release date (best evidence has it at early 2006) all it tells you is they're looking to get a list of early adopters to sell to.
