something doesnt seem right on my setup, sky hd sunrise looks to me a far better picture than planet earth bluray does! maybe its just my eyes but i dont think so..
the ps3 is via hdmi and the sky hd is component, plasma is samsung ps42q7hdx.
maybe im expecting too much but i would have presumed the bluray would give a noticeably better image..

Depending on the program SkyHD can look very good. Some material is video based rather than film and this looks very different to film. Make sure you compare like with like.

I have SkyHD, HD DVD and Blu-ray. Both HD formats produce better images than SkyHD on my setup. The most noticeable difference is blocking typically in scenes such as an explosion or fast action, banding/fizzing in scenes containing blocks of colour and pixelation/dot crawl in dark scenes. This is down to compression and bandwidth limitations.

The other think to consisder is IIRC your display is 1024x768. It's using less than half the image data (resolution) 1920x1080 contained on the HD disc. HD Audio is also a significant improvement on the HD discs compared to SkyHD.

so i need a 1080p really :smashin: no complaints on audio from either source.
cheers

Generally speaking Sky HD has a better picture than planet earth's one. However it is not the blu ray that you must compare with sky HD.
Please take a look to Casino royale blu ray and you will be surprised by the vivid colors, the depth of the picture and its 3D sense as well as its far superior sharpness.
Picture quality is a very delicate thing and many factors are involved such as the transfer rate and the method used for encoding!

What signal type (720p/1080i) do you send to the display and is it the same for both devices ? The other thing that can affect the perception of PQ is that the HD discs are output (typically) at 60hz rather than 50hz that SkyHD uses. This makes a difference at the display in terms of video processing and many displays are poor with film material output at 60hz.

Increased resolution can be beneficial if your viewing distance relative to screen size is within optimum range. Outside of this range and the difference in res is less apparent. There are also other factors that affect PQ and res whilst important is just one of them. :)

i got casino free with the ps3 and was actually dissapointed with it but i believe the updates on the ps3 may actually change that now or i had various settings wrong on the ps3(possibly still do!)
i was expecting planet earth to be mind blowing as everyone always says bbc hd tends to be better than most,i mean its still great but not mind blowingly great.
so let me get this 1080p thing straight, you are saying my screen can only physically show half the data that is on the disc?? thats a lot of info missing!
edit-sky is set to auto and ps3 to 1080i

Digital displays use a fixed pixel matrix. Your display has a resolution of 1024x768 pixels or 786432 bits of image. Typically HD discs contain frames with a resolution of 1920x1080 or 2073600 bits of image. To make this frame fit your display downscales the image i.e. throws away 1287168 bits of image. More image data is discarded than is used!

Also displays use different deinterlacing techniques such as bob, weave, motion compensated etc. Processing 1080i/60 film material is more complicated than processing 1080i/50. Many displays are poor at film deinterlacing with 60hz material. The worst simply use bob based deinterlacing which effectively throws away half the resolution and that assumes they detect the correct cadence. The result can be the same material at 50hz looks very different to same material at 60hz on some displays even if the source is better.

thanks for the helpful replies :) anyone want to but a samsung lol

In real terms, you won't see a massive improvement with a full hd set, with the size of your screen, i'd only start thinking about full hd for 50" and above, so don't worry about it and get watching!!

Well I have a Panny 42PZ70 with Sky HD and a Panny DMR-EX87 DVD/Hard disk recorder. I have the following setup-

TV - 1080P (its a full HD set)
Panny DMREX87 - ouput at 1080P (upscales Freeview and SD-DVD's)
Sky HD - output at 1080i

If these above look wrong let me know, all connected thru HDMI:)

I agree with the first post that sky HD is very good, clear and very good PQ. The freeview is better on the 42PZ70, freeview from the upscaled DMR87 is not so good as the TV.

The upscaled DVD's from the EX87 are ok, Ive played around with the output from the unit and 1080P gives the best result. However I dont think this unit is 'brilliant' at upscaling, not seen any proper reviews on it tbh for that task.

I nearly jumped onto HD DVD but will now get a PS3, my only concerns are that I hope its upscaling of SD-DVD's will be better than my EX87 and that the PQ of Blu-ray will at least be as good but hopefully better than Sky HD.
