An item was published in the IBC daily newspaper, which was based on info from sources inside BskyB.

Basically demo units in Comet and other places in December, with real service launching in February 2006.

    Here's the link
    http://hugecgi.com/cgi-bin/ibc_dailynews1.cgi?db_id=122897&issue=4

Tandberg where showing there realtime H.264 encoding with an 8Mbps CBR encoded channel and a 4 channel stat muxed feed. Resolution was 1440x1080 and 1280x1080.

Tandberg are supplying encoders to BskyB.

I'd subscribe, but I'm not paying 400 a box for a few channels.

I'd much rather use my capable HTPC sat here. I hope we can subscribe without the box, using a phoenix card reader and NDS softcam.

I can't believe you guys think this is value :thumbsdow

How about £2 a month sub and £100 for the box???

I subscribe to the top package (movies and sports) and think I'm getting ripped off.

If everyone told Rupert to stick it where the sun don't shine, he'd bring his prices down.
I was really hoping that we'd get this for an decent price, as an effort to reduce the churn rate.

What's the latest on free Sky + for everyone ??.
Has that turned out to be rubbish ???

I'm with you on this, I'll be waiting for a long time before I opt for HD. That pricing is ridiculous imo.

Shhh ! Without the early adopters paying top-dollar, how will we ever get our HD boxes for £99 ? :rotfl:

Currently having a sky+ box my thinking is that i can sell my current sky+ on ebay once the HD box is installed, netting me 70-100, is a new install required or is it a simple cable exchange.

I'd love Sky HD. HD movies before Bluray kicks off. And Discovery HD etc.

But I only have a basic family mix, so the delta to HD is too much - £20pm -> 50+ pm.

    Guess I'll wait

Hmm, well I'm not even a Sky subscriber at the moment so I'll wait and see what prices are like before I commit. I need a first gen box tho cos I only have HD over component!

I'm the same.. only have basic package and would have paid the premium for an early box, but having to go to the top package + an extra £10 is just way too steep (would pay for movies as I can see the logic needing movies to get HD movies, but sport is utterly uninteresting to me & is just throwing money down the toilet).

You might as well go to your local garden centre for advice than ask anyone in Comet :rotfl:

Comet people at a seminar - good one :D

the easy way to solve the hd situation. 1 buy a rotating dish get yourself a european digibox[about£120], 2 steer the dish to 19e.3 grab a crash course in learning german,4 watch hd for nothing on the fta sat channels.5 tell ruport to stick his sky+ subscriptions.i've been using european digital for years.the germans are light years ahead of sky for their fta stuff.initally it might be a bit of hassle,in the end it's worth it.a few guys on here have motorised setups, they will tell you,you would never go back to sky again.

    regards machinehead :D :D :D

I have a motorized system and can speak German - but Sky is still good for me. It's amazing that crap is universal at the end of the day - the German channels have some good stuff but a lot (and I mean a lot) is talking heads studio stuff. Italian is cheap games shows, etc etc.

I am looking forward to Pro7 HD and Sat 1 HD (starting 26 October on German FTA HD) though...bit like Sky1 for stuff (Enterprise etc)

when you compare this to the thousand or so pounds the first DVD players cost back in the 90s.

it actually looks a bit of bargain

You pay a premium for being an early adopter. The first Video recorders cost a fair bit more (£800 or so) but that was in 1975 !

Kinda puts the £400 sky are asking for HD into perspective. Remember that Sky HD is also SKY + 160 as well, which in itself is £200. So really your only paying for £2/300 extra for the HD bit.

Early adopters pay a premium, its always been the case, and always will. You dont whinge about the cost of brand new technological advancements if your a true enthusiast.

    How true, absolutely spot on.

If you look at how much (enthusiasts) pay for their kit and cables its nothing what Sky are asking.

Without HD from Sky is there really any point in av gear?

If you want variation of streaming media there is no alternative.

Sky+ was £400 plus installation when it was launched and for a long time afterwards.
