Had HD installed on Thursday  BBC HD preview is stunning.

Anyway did a little search i found several issue's about the optical out problems which i seem to have, when i switch channels there is a very long pause (20 secs) before the sound come's through the amp?
    The really question is:

Do i have to use RCA cables as well to get sound to my amp whilst watching SD channels?
Or should the sound come over optical on SD channels as well as HD?
Currently i get no sound at all over optical whilst watching SD?

    Regards James

You should get audio over the optical whilst watching SD channels. Make sure that you have your HD box set to output dolby digital in the sound menu. Then make sure your amp is set to auto detect rather than just DD5.1. If your amp is clever enough it will set the audio for normal stereo channels to Dolby PLII

Thanks for the reply davybaker, need a new amp :rotfl: doesn't switch automaticaly hence no sound. To be honest it is the weekest link in my setup at the mo just a cheap (Richersounds) Sherwood 925 just don't think the wife will let me spend even more money on "Gadgets" as she says

    Regards james

I have a denon AVR1906 from Richersounds and it does everything I need. You dont necessarily need an amp that has HDMI connections to enjoy HD quality pictures as well as ease of switching sound/video sources.

Just been looking a one of those, then i found the AVR-3805  there's one on EBAY brand new etc.. £350 i so tempted but i would hit the floor when she found out

Think i need to put a bit of thought in to this as i have know for a long time that my amp needed replacing.
