FYI all those of you living outside the UK, I just received this from my Man in Bavaria:

    "Dateline 19.07.01

In the last 24 hours Sky One has moved to one of the new "UK only"
transponders on the satellite Astra 2D. This means that many viewers in
central, southern and eastern Europe can no longer receive this channel
when using the standard 43cm "minidish", ( for a detailed coverage map see http://www.astra.lu/images/footprints/2_d.gif ). In order to recover this
channel many viewers will need a dish in excess of 1.2metres

Sky One joins a number of (more obscure!) channels such as Hallmark, Tara,
and a number of Box Office channels who now use this new satellite since
February this year, and will also be used by ITV when it comes on-air at
    the end of 2001

Sky have not provided and public reason for this move, but it is possible
that it is simply temporary. A further satellite is expected to start
transmissions later this year, which should have full coverage of Europe,
so it is possible that those channels currently lost to ex-patriots, may
move over to this and therefore return to view."

    Oh my gawd.
I hope its not permanent. The other way they could wipe out everything is to put the index channel (which is required for your reciever to lock onto) on Astra 1D, this would have the effect of all channels being unavailable to ex-pats without massive dishes.

    I live in Menorca, so I am very worried about this new development.<br />At present I just want the free channels (BBC1, 2 etc), but I beleive that if the index channel was moved, even these would be lost.<br /> <img src="eek.gif" border="0"> <img src="eek.gif" border="0"> <img src="mad.gif" border="0"> <img src="mad.gif" border="0"> <img src="eek.gif" border="0"> <img src="eek.gif" border="0">

Hmmm...I never lost Sky One at all, even here in Bavaria which is supposedly out of the footprint. Apparently Sky did move it, but got so many calls from 'legitimate' users in the UK that they moved it back...don't know how true this is, or how long it will save us ex-pats from Skylessness!!!

Hi Keith.<br />What size dish do you use in Munich? I may be there for work in the near future and will take my receiver with me.

ISCM, I use the standard small Sky Digital dish. Reception is just fine. I do find we lose it when there's a bad storm, but then so does a friend of mine with an 80cm dish. The only channels we don't seem to get are those on the 'small footprint' transponders, like Tara, Sky Destinations, etc...nothing I'd watch anyway.

    Keith, my worry is that SKY may move the index channel to the small footprint transponder to make reception of Sky outside the UK difficult.<br /> <img src="eek.gif" border="0"> <img src="eek.gif" border="0"> <img src="confused.gif" border="0"> <img src="confused.gif" border="0"> <img src="eek.gif" border="0"> <img src="eek.gif" border="0">
