OK, so I love sky +, but when I first had it there was hardly any fan activity, now it just seems to switch the fan on and off for no apparant reason. The box may be switched off, with nothing recording and suddenly the fan would go on. Reasons anyone?

A software drop, probably 2 months ago now, changed the way the fan works. The fan is programmed to be on a lot more. Guess Sky were getting to many failures due to over heating. Remember that even though it looks like its in standby the box is still on and possbily recording, hence heat genretion, hence fan

I had fan noise and bought a 12v, 50mm case fan from Maplins, I took the cover off the back of the Sky+ box, the one for upgrades, then blue tacked it over the hole blowing inwards, I run it at 6v and it`s not loud at all, you cannot hear it, a piece of muslin over the fan stops dust getting in. Now the Sky+ fan hardly ever come on and the box is cold, oh I use a power supply that can be bought at Maplins and leave it running all the time. I works great.

Bought my Sky + box about a month ago.
The fan seems to be on all the time, even when in standby which I couldn't understand. You can only just hear it when everything is quiet and it doean't really bother me.

Even in standby the SKY+ is using virtually the same amount of power and thus generating the same internal heat levels also the hard drive spins continuously which is another major heat source.

It maybe the SKY+ just needs a reboot.
After a new install some people have reported the fan running all the time (in a kind of default mode) and a reboot has reset the fan to normal operation (only coming on when needed).

Turn it off at the plug, count to 10 then turn it back on.
Just a power reset really not a OS reload and nothing should be affected on the hard drive or series links ets although if you were being very cautious you might make sure the HD is not recording when you cut the power.

Reboot didn't work for me - the fan is on continuously even in standby.

Then it's safe to assume that the SKY+ is simply running too hot and the passive ventilation is too low and needs the additional airflow generated by the fan. That would be very worrying as it would indicate the temp never reaches "safe" levels and therefore the lifespan of the internal components is likely to be reduced.

It could be a hardware fault of course but it might be useful to move the SKY+ into a well ventilated area (or even remove the case) and see if the fan turns off.

My fan (Thomson) sounds like a 737 on takeoff. I wonder if a squirt of WD40 would help...

Dust will stick to it and make the problem worse. Try cleaning the fan.
