I have a low end Philips lx3000d home cinema system that i wanted to run the Sky+ 5.1dd through but looking at the connections on the back of the amp/player it only has optical and coaxial outs ....does this mean i cannot receive the dd5.1 signals through this sytem as the only other input is Aux but i doubt this will channel 5.1 as it accepts normal phono leads does this sound right?.........Have i bought a duff limited set up?

why would an amp have optical outs?

surely an amp receives the optical source from Sky+, DVD etc then outputs the sound through the speakers

sky+ only has an optical out

the coaxial is usually used in DVD players

I believe the DD5.1 can only be transfered using the optical/coaxial leads

Thanks for the reply Bob I was wondering the same..! I guess seing as it is only a 200 watt system of average sound quality that you have the option to use the dvd player element of the system on its own and link that to an additional amp...........it's almost like admitting defeat whilst they were making the damn thing ...............nevermind i got a stupidly cheap deal on it and dvd repro is excellent so i might have to invest into a stand alone amp etc..........more dosh:mad:

Optical out on the amp/dvd.... not defeat but record! To get your CDs on to MD or copied. Connectability is never gunna be enough (esp. as bargain prices), the 'next thing' will need a hole you ain't got, you want the 'next thing', and so the upgrade cycle starts (again..) ain't it fun!
