Has anyone purchased one of these modded sky+ boxes with sdi and if so is it worth the £500 outlay?
I was at a clients last weekend who bought one from David at Plugged in. I set it up with his Panny50" SDI to Lumagen HDP Pro. Also fed Component from a john sim convertor to another input on the scaler. The difference was pretty obvious to me, the customer, and his partner. SDI was much sharper, more detailed, less noise....looked amazingly good for a Sky box. This was on NEWS24.
Thank you for that Gordon, but was the difference worth £500 or is there a cheaper way of converting to sdi?
well if you source your own box the mod is £220ish i think Plugged in and PJ Hifi do em IIRC
I've just sourced one off ebay for slightly cheaper, (brand new box) and bunged in a 160Gb hard disk. There is a very marked difference, IMO colours richer, everything sharper. I'm feeding it into a Lumagen HDP scaler and into a Pio 505XDE.
I am noticing what I gather is called 'combing' (I'd heard the term before but never actually seen the effect until now) on a couple of low bitrate channels, e.g. FX289, but this may be a scaler/plasma problem rather than inherent to the SDI mod. My scaler setup is far from optimised, but if the best possible picture quality from Sky is your aim, it's the only way to go.
Thank you Scrowe that was most helpful
