can I buy a second hand sky + box and just swap it for the standard sky box i.e wire it in and connect it to my dish without sky knowing? or are there technical issues when receiving a signal through the sky + box, etc, etc

Yes you can buy a second hand SKY+.
SKY+ requires two LNB connections if you intend to use it's recording features and your smartcard will need to be activated and payment made to SKY for that facility.

However if you only want to use it as a "normal" digibox then a single connection is fine BUT it has no autoview function and you still need to marry your smartcard to the SKY+ to get all the channels you subscribe too. It might be possible to run the "New Installation" routine via a phone connection instead of a voice call but I am not 100% sure.
