As a movie fan I want to listen to my sky movies in 5.1 but my 6 month old box doesn't support it. How do I upgrade to 5.1? or do I need to buy sky plus?

you need a sky+ box to achieve DD5.1 on sky movies

if sky+ features do not interest you it may be possible to pick up a second hand sky+ box which will still offer DD5.1

I am sure there was a thread a while back which said that when sky come to replace a sky+ box with a fault they left the old box

so as long as the fault is with the HD recording it would still be fine for you

maybe put a wanted in the hardware section
