Has anyone noticed any differences in the volume and quality of the supporting multi channel sound tracks via a Sky hd box over the last 5 to 6 months?
Don't know if I am going mad or what but it seems every time I listen to 5.1 from my sky box (via my receiver) I have to have the volume slightly higher than I did last time. Are they compressing the signal or something? Its not just the volume either I don't think it sounds as subtle and as nice as it used to a year or so ago.
Thought I might just be going deaf (getting on a bit nowadays) but I am still able to use the same volume levels on the receiver for other inputs such as Blu rays, dvd or even freeview. Its def only the sky box that has had diminishing quality 5.1 sound tracks over several months.

For example for years we would listen to most Sky HD movies with -22 displayed as the volume level but now its often as high as -10 and can vary quite wildly from one programme to the next.

Please tell me its not me !!

See if your receiver lets you up the db level for the hdmi input of your sky box.
    (Assuming you use that).
I've upped mine on my Yamaha and it's much better.

Yeah I watched Oblivion (in HD) recorded off on demand and the sound was ridiculously quiet. Normally HD movies/channels are much louder than the SD equivalents in my experience.

Well glad its not just me then. Would love to know why though, I mean something must be getting changed for the sound track to be so much quieter than they used to be. Probably just another way of sky dumbing everything down in the world of HD broadcasting I mean Freeview HD is so much better than the same Sky HD broadcast so we know things could and should be better than they are.

I'm using same numbers as you are, about 22 before and 10 now.

I'd been thinking that, after having to move the system, I'd somehow wired it back up wrong. Seeing others have the same issue and discs still being dynamic proved that not to be the case. The life seems to have been sucked out of the soundtracks. I watched Jack The Giant Slayer last night and the soundtrack was pretty dull.

It's worse on box office movies IMO - I've actually cancelled the movie package but Strike Back was affected quite badly. I also have problems understanding what some people are saying as well...Johnny Lee Miller in Elementary is particularly hard to make out. I'm using a reasonable Yamaha receiver and M&K speakers...blu ray tracks are fine as are some programmes on sky. Notably don't have problems on live stuff like football and Sky News

Check out "Bernie" which started on Saturday. I tried different versions including the on-demand one. All of them had huge silent gaps in the audio track.
