Out of curiosity, is it NOT recommended to have the same make and model rear left and right surround speakers as the front left and right speakers in bookshelf size in 5.1?

What about 6.1 and 7.1 providing the front and rear centre(s) are of the same make and model?

Would the sound be any better or worse and is there anyone using this kind of set-up?

    TIA

    Tardis.

The optimum type of rear speaker depends to a large extent on room layout as in some rooms direct radiating speakers will work well but in others with less room behind the seating position bipole speakers on the rear or side walls will work better.

Multichannel music on DVDA or SACD is mastered for optimum reproduction with all five speakers equidistant away from the listener and I would guess that five identical speakers would be optimum - if you have the right room layout which I would guess most of us don't.
