i wouldn't bother, unless you like charging your controllers on a daily basis

Well since this LED is not hooked up to the console, I'm not suprised..

I'll assume it's probable there could be a battery in the PS3, similar to that of a PC bios battery.
 
so your saying that a little 1.8-3v LED which draws very little current and a low value resistor attached to it will drain the battery significantly. That doesn't sound right mate.
