Watched the pilot of this tonight on C4. Really enjoyed it. Little bit different to American Beauty, but the 'stamp' was there. Some nice moments of black comedy - the adverts for funeral products were hilarious I thought. :D Thought the characters were quite 'well formed' and I'm keen to see how they develop through the series. Was reminiscent of a cross between 'Fargo', 'Northern Exposure', 'Twin Peaks', 'American Beauty' and 'Party of Five', all rolled into one with a cherry on the top. It's clear to see where the influences are coming from anyway.

I have a friend in the US who tells me they've just finished the 2nd season there, so it looks like we have some catching up to do.

What did everyone else think? :)

Apparently it will be repeated on E4 later this week. Not sure when though.

I had heard tons of great stuff about this show, but I steered clear of all the commercials and details so I could go in as a clean slate.

Although I expected it to be more comedy, and less drama, it was still excellent, and despite the rather morbid plotline, I thought it was very life-affirming. I'll definitely be tuning in for every episode.

As bad as US television is at the moment, (trust me, UK viewers don't get to see 90% of the drek that fills their airwaves) you can always count on HBO for quality programming.

I saw the first half of it, but then my phone went and I missed the rest. But thought it was good from what I saw.

Well, second episode just finished. Wasn't as good as the pilot (it lost my attention in places) but I still enjoyed it. There's obviously something going on behind the scenes with Nath's "girlfriend"... curious ....

How they managed to get away with showing an erect penis on C4 I know not  Maybe it was a cast

    Nice soundtrack again :)

Didn't look very "erect" to me (mind you, I'd just been watching a John Holmes skin flick so anything would look insignificant after that ).

I noticed on the opening credits that Alan Ball (is that his name?) is just credited as the "creator" of the show after the pilot. Episode 2 was written by some other guy, which I guess explains why it wasn't as good

I thought there was one great touch in Episode 2. When the two guys were driving to pick up the dead body, they both had seatbelts on. I can't remember ever seeing this in a TV show before. Considering their job, and what happened to his father, it makes sense, but I thought it was a nice (albeit subtle) touch.

I also like the fact that the actor playing the father is still in the show. I was a little worried that he'd be phased out after the 1st episode.

I missed the weird commercials, though.

Richard Jenkins is a great actor... his career is pretty amazing for a non-'big name'.

His performance in 'Say It Isn't So' is hilarious!

Didn't he play "Dad" in the Bill and Ted movies?

I agree that this is a worthy view for many reasons and requires a second view - E4 has a use at last. The cast and additions also were aware of it's potential considering who was behind it. Nice to see Milo out of 24, Tracy Middendorf from various teen stuff - Angel also - and the guy who's dad had the flag flying at half mast was familiar too. Plus Ed Begley Jr, who I cannot erase from my mind as being the clutz in St. Elsewhere, but who seemed a tad young for mom? It'll be interesting just doing the weekly who's who at this rate...

I loved seeing Ed Jr. appear, but it looks like that was a one-shot deal. Hope to see him back as a recurring character.

He renewed my respect for him after his stint as the hotel manager in "Best in Show".
