My sony 1070 amp sits on the bottom of my stand. The gap between the top of the amp & the glass shelf above it is only 70mm. I was hoping to fit a dvd in this space as I have no other room for it on the stand & don`t want to buy another at the moment.
The new toshiba SD220E is 69mm high. As you can see, with this model sitting directly on top of my amp there is only 1mm top clearance. The other dvd I had in mind is the new pioneer dv-444S @55mm high. If I put one of these on top of my amp, am I looking for trouble with the amp,dvd or both considering the heat that can be given out from these amps????

    thanks del. :p

    I wouldn't do it.

Look in the back of the manual and it will give the clearances your amp should have to allow it adequate air so it dosn't get too hot.

Dvd players get rather warm as it is too.

    Seconded,

You'll end up frying your amp with only 1mm clearance.

With either DVD player sitting on top of the amp, the clearance will be minimal. Is the top of the rack free to place the amp?

I did look in the manual but it does not give any specific clearances,it just says don`t put anything on
top that will cover the ventilation holes.

It is not possible to put amp anywhere else,so I might have to rethink buying another unit.

The other guys are right, it is not recomended.
But I can add that I did have my DVD & VCR on top of my 1070 for quite some time without too many problems.

It did get very hot though. I am happy now that it is out in the open.

Unless you have an AC or fan which you can directly blow onto the unit (even if its from across the room) that will provide some airflow, if you've got no other option.

BTW - In case you haven't moticed, it only gets REAL hot when you are listening to all 6 channels up fairly loud. If you are only listening to music (2 channel) or only listening to movies at moderate volumes, it isnt nearly as bad.

    definitely dont do it.

1mm is absolutely no way... even the 15-20mm pioneer would be pushing it.

think it was 5cm clearance on my old Sony 925... probably 6-7 for the 1070.

Most manufacturers advise to leave at least 10cm free air around the amp.
But if space is limited you can always plug a fan in the switched mains outlet on the back of your Sony and aim it at the vents...
When you're driving your amp really hard, just check with your hand every now and then that it isn't getting too hot.
