One of the most knowledgeable politicians the UK ever had. Pity he didn't have the personality to match. May he rest in peace.
i wonder what Maggie said when she heard
Great shame. The last 'true Tory' leader has passed away. Apparently a geniunely nice man (my father in law knew him), and as nick says, a well versed and intelligent one. Just lacked the skills that make up a national leader.
May he rest in peace.
Keen sailor and musician as well as old school politician.
Seem to remeber him conducting an orchestra once.
Tony Benn said he was a nice chap and was further to the left than Tony Blair.
It's a shame that MSN didn't proof their headline before posting it. Looks like he beat Pitt the Younger.
but so was Atilla the Hun!
Tony Blair and John Prescott are closet Tories.
They're just afraid to say the dreaded "C word"
They walk the walk, they just can't talk the talk.
It was often said that Heath and Wilson could have easily swopped roles. Wilson was condemned by the Left as well.
Mind you Benns a "silver spoon" leftie with a dodgy family past anyway........
as an aside....and disregarding whether it's right or wrong...I did find one of Harold Wilson's comment on Ted very amusing......"He is a shiver looking for a spine to run up"!
Best brain the Labour party had, although I do not totaly agree with him on some policies.
Always put a good point of view forwards
Tony Benn-one of the best orators and widely respected for sticking to issues and not personalities. An absolute gentleman who was sometimes horrified by the conflicts he witnessed between MPs ,most often within his own party.
He was well before my time, but on the few snippets I've seen over the years I was impressed.
I got the impression he actually believed the words coming out of his mouth!
- Looks like he was an interesting bloke too, I was never aware of that before now..?
No chance. John smith took that honour in the modern era. Benns a 'no-risk Socialist'. It's easy to be 'a beddist' (hi J&y) when you've got the money and clout to dig yourself out of a hole.
He and his mob tried to put the frighteners on a mate of mines dad who wrote a book (commissioned by Benn) about the Benn family. Benn thought as the author was left wing he'd gloss over the Wedgewood-Benn families ugly past - he didnt! So 'gentleman Benn' tried to bully him into not publishing...........
Some of Mrs T's comments about Heath are funny as well.
