    Hi,
I use my computer for playing music and was looking for a cheapo remote that I could use simply to play/pause/skip tracks in windows media player. Would an ir receiver and some old remote be the best option?
    Thanks!

    yes,

you can make/buy a receiver for under £10 pretty easily (or even less if you are a bit handy with a soldering iron) that plugs into the serial port. Then, train any old remote buttons, play, pause, whatever and use winlirc to intepret the commands.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention! I bought one on the way home tonight.

It's nothing fancy but it does the basics. There is even some functionality with MC.

I'm struggling to get FF to work though. It justs wants to skip.

    this remote
    http://www.gocyberlink.com/multi/cyberstore/product_order.jsp?ProdId=44
available for £10 from overclockers.co.uk is 100% mce compatable (except it has no ir blaster, so perfect for dvb-t users) comes with usb receiver also
it has a "home button", which makes mce start (equivalent to the green button)

it has my music buttons, which makes mce go to "my music"....

it has "my tv" buttons...which makes mce go to "my tv" etc etc etc...you get the idea.

and the buttons are the rubber type, not the credit card type push-with-your-nails affair.

    tested and approved:) by me..lol

it is smaller than the ati remote as far as I can tell. About as long as last years mce remote.

It is pretty much the exact same remote that ships with the elonex exentia (when they ship the mce version) supplied by cyberlink orignally to use with powercinema

Lat I saw they were £19 but looks like they have dropped to £10, so i may just get a few for myself. Always handy to have spares (p.s. it is not ocmpatable with the mce remote receiver, it only works with it;s own remote receiver, however the codes it passes to windows are the same as what the mce rmeote passes, if you follow me...)

    scroll down, £10

top left button has a picture of a house on it (home) this is the mce green button equivalent. The rest do what they say.....
