Getting Sky installed next week, apparently the engineer will ring on the morning to let me know which time slot I'll get. The thing is, shall I chance him bringing me a silver digibox (to match tv etc) or ask him if there's any chance of getting one if I slip him £20 or something. They must have choice do they what they take from the warehouse or am I pushing my luck

Phil.....ready with a tin of silver spray if its black :)

My last box was a silver grundig one, when I questioned the engineer about it he said that this was the only box they were getting in at the time, bare in mind this was about a month ago, so hopefully you will be okay...

My father had Sky installed last Friday and the box was a silver Panasonic. According to the installer Sky are only using Panasonic at the moment.

Fingers crossed then :)

Thanks guys

when i got mine installed i just asked the operator to sort me a silver one out to match the other stuff and quite nicely i got one :)

if you dont ask...

Its all a metter of luck. I tried the old bribary for a sony digibox and was politely refused. It was a sky rather than a local engineer who did everything by the book

Yeah, was told the same by sky, 90% chance of getting a black one :-(

If you get a box through an independant dealer (usually specialist TV shops, not Dixons etc), they will be able to get you whatever make/model of box you want. They do the installation themselves.

I used this method a couple of years ago because I wanted a Sony box - that was when they first came out. It works out a bit more expensive than having the installation done by Sky though.

There have been many threads on here about trying to get the box of you choice from Sky (if you search you will probably find them). It is sometimes possible, but I couldn't do it. :(

I also have a $ly instaler coming next week.I've informed $ly that if i don't get a Sony then the guy will be returning without my custom. I also called to speak with the instalers and have requested directly that i get a Sony receiver- I also told them that to save thier poor overworked and highly skilled instaler a lot of hassle i have already fitted the coax run under floors and brought the tail out at the rear of the tv,so hopefuly after doing the hard work for him he will be a little sympathetic. :D

I don't think Sky use Sony boxes anymore Lynx :( They should have told you that.
There was a thread about it recently...

I paid £200 for my box, and I installed the dish, the cable etc.. but they still didn't give me a choice - I wanted/needed Sony, but got a Pace. Was not happy.

Both the installer and $ly customer service had ample opertunity to inform me of that, indeed the installer has indicated on the job sheet that i have requested a Sony. Plus i told $ly cs that if i couldn't get the equipment of choice then they could stick my custom where polly stuck her nuts :)

PS were kinda highjacking poor phils thread a little now :D

Confucius here says that sky no longer use sony in their subsidised offers. Not sure if that affects you?

And a very worthwhile contribution it was too. :)

Sorry about hijacking your thread philst68i!! :D

Actually I think all the digiboxes are silver anyway. The panasonic is, the pace is silver and black, and i think the grundig might be silver too.

No probs Lex, I actually got the Pace box,not true silver but a lot better than a black box standing out from my nice new set-up.

Me happy:rolleyes:

I tried to have Sky nbstalled THREE times and told them upfront that I wanted a BLACK box to match the rest of my gear.

Yes, I know that you are supposed to take whatever they give you, but I made it clear to them that as the CUSTOMER, I get to decide :)

After arriving the third time with a silver box, Sky cancelled the installation, so I am now the happy owner of a Hauppauge DEC-2000.....

UK style customer service once again :(

BJ

all new sky boxes are now silver (well maybe with a bit of black detail)

you cant choose your make of box you will get what ever is in stock and sent to the installer.

new sony boxes are not being fitted.

the only way to get what make you want is to source one either new or secondhand yourself,or be very nice to the installer,eg(cups of tea, cakes, biscuits etc and say you will slip him a £20 note if he would say your nice new box is faulty and replace it with a nice grade a sony or silver panny!!!

trust me!!;)
