This may be a bit of a silly question but is there anything wrong with lieing the STB on its side instead of flat?

I wouldn't have thought so as long as the heat the chipset/psu generates can escape from the vents and it doesn't cook itself.
Give that TW will replace a broken box as a matter of course what have you got to lose:)

Stand it on the opposite end to the power supply (where the mains lead goes in).

Best to let the hot air out. :D
