Is there anywhere in the U.K i can get hold of this?
Having done a quick search with google, I haven't found a UK supplier. However, you can order direct from the silenx website
The PSU itself is $100, and shipping is as follows:
Global Express Mail (3-5 days) $44
Airmail Parcel Post (4-10 days) $37
Economy Parcel Post (4-6 weeks) $28
So, going fo the psu with the fastest shipping time will set you back around 100 sterling (based on an exchange rate of 1.5 dollars to the pound), but it will go up and down with the exchange rate.
For a silent 400W PSU, that's not a bad price.
Quiet PC have an ultra quiet 400W psu for £76, and it's rated to be less than 28dba, so not as good as the silenx. Adding 2 day delivery and VAT takes the final cost to £96.
Hope this helps,
Can't really see any logic in going for such a PSU. Units from Enermax & Antec are pretty much silent anyway, available locally & excellent quality/reliable.
thanks for the homework tony - i actually got an email from them since i posted this question, and apparently they'll discount another $10 when you fill out some kind of questionare on the website. I'll have to ponder on the faff of ordering it direct from them (especially if it arrived duff etc), but i'd really like one of these.
I hear what you're saying Kramer about the other makes, but most of them seem to quote their lowest DBA rating, which, always goes up under full load/more heat/faster fan speed. The SilenX is rated at <14dba at full load., with 7 or 8dba on idle. Maybe some other makes also quote their loudest figure - i would dearly like to be proved wrong on this.
I've got an Antec 330 power supply and it's extremely quiet
How about one of the passively cooled PSUs available at www.kustompcs.co.uk
Can't get any quieter than 0dba!
Those passive psu's look really good, and like you say, a noise output of 0dbA means total silence. Just a shame about the price!
I wonder how hot the heatsink gets?
Probably a silly question I know, but I wonder if there is a reasonably simple way for an existing psu to be converted to passive operation - could be worth investigating....
excellent link adam!! - dont think i'll be pushing for a fanless one but best choice i've ever seen from one supplier
*UPDATE* just ordered the Nexus NX3500 (from Kustom) - looks good for the money
Not only a fantastic range of QUALITY hardware, their customer service is second to none.
I'd secon that. I've used Kustom a couple of times.
Just to pick up on something that Kramer said. I have a Antec Truepower 430 watt PSU, and quiet it is, but silent it's not. I have just moved to watercooling with the rad and fan in a different room, and now find the noise from the Power supply audible. They are fantastic quality though, but just not silent.
my enermax 365w is very quiet on its lowest setting. ive left it there and not once have the fans sped up.
Yeah, Enermax does it for me too. 550w VE-FMA is cool, quiet and has ultra stable voltage and current on all rails. Top stuff.
jsut like to round this thread off by saying that i am well pleased with the Nexus 3500 - i just cant hear it at all, even under load!!
probably one of the best investments i've made for my pc.
The PSU that comes with Antec's Sonata case is another one to consider if silence is paramount.
It uses just one 120mm fan at very low RPM - silent in the case (which itself is excellent).
