I've just tried to play my MGM 2 disc Silence of the Lambs Dvd and its got the dreaded cloudy, sticky discs.

Does anyone know if i can still get them swapped by MGM ?

I've searched on the forums, but the last mention i can find of the problems is almost a year ago.

Whats really annoyed me is when the problems with the discs were mentioned ages ago, i checked them and they were fine, I go to play them now and :suicide:

The freephone number for the replacement scheme (0800 3898384) is still active, and there is another number in case you haven't received replacements (0800 0566550). It could be worth checking the second number to see if you can speak to someone before returning your discs.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks Miniholic,

I knew about the first number but not the second, and i didn't fancy sending the discs off without confirmation that they are still replacing the discs.

I'll give them a ring in the morning.

I don't know how i managed to post this in the Bargain section  it was ment to be in the Movies & Movie DVDs section

No Danjaq, you'll be fine, it's just the first batches that were affected. It was something to do with the inks used for the disc labelling, and the way in which they were stored at the distributers.

well technically since i can't play them, and I cant return them to the shop as i bought them years ago, i'm not really losing anything by sending them out, but i know what you mean, i doubt they confirm or anything, you probably just receive new discs a month later..

I used the FREEPOST DVD RETURN address for my Terminator DVDs and it worked fine, in fact they came back within just a few days.

Theres a number of dvds that were knackered due to poor manufacture by Technicolor UK.
These list is taken from the dvdforums - theres a huge thread about this problem.

Note i dont think MGM/other are replacing the films apart from Terminator and Silence of the lambs.

brilliant, i just checked my Dinosaur dvd and both discs are screwed. my copy of bound looks ok though.

edit:my dinosaur dvd still plays fine despite being faulty. maybe my terminator and sotl ones will too, but i think i will still send them back as i'd prefer new copies.

Thanks for that list cap, just checked mine and both Casino Royale and Never Say Never Again are scrap. :(

The only other one on that list in my collection is Thunderball, but that looks and plays ok - I bought it on release day so maybe it's from an earlier batch.

just checked my Rocky boxset and I've got 5 new frisbees :(

Surely we have trading standards on our side so we can get these replaced.

Has anyone had any joy in getting any other titles replaced.

PS I've got a few more titles from that list, that I haven't checked yet.

Could someone explain what these 'problems' are with these discs are please, and what I should be looking out for with my copy of Thunderball and Never Say Never Again.

    Thanks.

On the disc there will be a sticky layer which means the dvd laser cannot read the film properly. Without cleaning the disk you may notice 'blockiness' and it some points it may refuse to play the disc and just freeze up.

well i got a phone call on Monday from Technicolor after leaving my details on the answering machine that picks up on the 2nd number, confirming that they are still offering to replace the affected Terminator and Silence Of The Lambs discs. So i boxed mine up and sent them back, now it's Thursday and i have my replacement discs already  along with 2 brand new dual amaray cases which im sure will come in handy :D

    Hi,
I have heard about this problem for the first time....and I have SOTL, T2 and Annie Hall DVDs from the list mentioned above.

Can someone describe exactly what should I check? Should I touch and check the playback surface for stickiness?? Apart from that, if the playback surface 'looks' normal shiny scratchless, does it mean these discs dont have a problem??

By the way, I bought SOTL 3 weeks back, while T2 and Annie Hall 6 months ago....

    Thanks...

    Hi Ash2004,

The SOTL and T2 discs that were affected were the first pressing ones in the cardboard digipacks, so if you bought SOTL a few weeks ago and T2 6 months ago they should be fine, i'm not sure about the annie hall.

The affected discs have a cloudy look to the shiny side and are slighty sticky to the touch.

if the surface of yours look normal "Shiny and Scratchless" then they should be fine.

    Hope yours are O.K.
