sigma 70-300 DL - autofocus sticking

Active Member
Hi guys,
i've just got myself a 400D and have been playing about with it (for all of an hour). I've just tried my sigma 70-300 DL that I had been using with my old EOS 500 and the autofocus seems to be 'stuck' - I get a bit of buzzing and the merest of movements, but it can't seem to move properly or focus, and the camera will not let me take a shot on AF, giving me an error 99 and asking me to switch off and back on again.
I took it off and tried it back on the 500 - same thing (except no error message obviously)! So I know it's not the camera, but am now wondering what to do with the lens. It can take shots OK using manual focus, but I'd really quite like AF back.
Any ideas?
