Someone is offering me a Sigma 70-300 apo with a gold band around the top. Anyone know this model? I'm a new boy and don't want to be stung. Thanks.

I'm confident that the 70-300 "APO" version has red and non-APO has a gold stripe - therefore you should be careful before you buy.

The APO version is highly regarded in terms of VFM and optical quality, the Non-APO version isn't quite such a bargain.

Get the one with red

The gold one will work , its just not as sharp as the red one

Thanks for the info, not worth the £90 he's asking for it then?
Think I'll hang on until something else comes up.

It may be "worth it" in relative terms but
IMHO that a little extra for the DG APO version is more VFM in sofar as the non APO version sells for £90 new
If you can, I would also ask you to consider a Zoom lens with IS.It makes a lot of difference especially if tripod use is not always expedient

Check Onestopdigital for the Sigma APO DG Macro (red ring) which has the additional lens coating. It's a very good budget zoom, but the gearing is cheap plastic.

Unless you fork out £295.00 for the Sigma DG OS version, the other budget alternative would be the Tamron 70-300mm Di LD.
