Have been looking at a 50 - 500 on ebay but have seen the price rise to more than that of a new 170 - 500, is one lens better than the other ?
I know that the range is much greater on the 50 - 500 but it could hardly be called a walkabout lens and as I already have a 70 - 300 I have the lower end already covered.

    Thoughts would be of interest.

    Bill,

The 170-500 is surprisingly small for its mm, however, a little slow at the longest end, though of course you can up your ISO, it would not cut it at night nor dusk. Nice build quality however.
