Sigma 24-70f2.8 for my D300s? Worth the money?

My normal lens for the D300s was my 18-200Nikon but now that has been given to my Son as he has got a D5100, I am looking for a alternative for me... want something as a fast lens and was looking at the Sigma 24-70f2.8.

I do have the 35mmf1.8 and 50mmf1.4 and realise that it covers the range that the 24-70 Sigma will provide however, it is the convenience(Lazyness) of having 1 lens that is attractive to me. I could just use the 35mm and use my legs as an alternative..

Am I going to benefit from this lens? If not, what else would you recommend?

I take it you don't mind losing the wide angle part of the lens? Personally I'd prefer something with the 24-70mm equivalent focal length on DX as that gives a versatile super wide angle through to portrait but if you don't need the wide angle side that doesn't matter.

John... I agree and would prefer to have the wider angle but then the option is the 17-55f2.8 but that is far too expensive for me... I do have the 10-24 Nikon so if need be, I can use that...

Tamron 17-50mm f2.8?

I did think of that... but then I am thinking, if D600 does come out, then I would want an FX lens as a future upgrade option and in that case the Sigma would be fine... so also looking at it from that point of view..

in reality, I should go for the Nikon 24-70 if I ever move to FF...

Darn it... why is my lottery ticket never the winning one!!!

Buy what you want it for now, looking to the future means you'll never buy it. :D

Get a second-hand one, you'll not lose much by selling it on for a full frame lens.

If you got the Nikon 10-24mm,do you need another lens ?,maybe wait to see if you are going full frame for the moment :)

Mind you this is from a man who has to many lens

For more than 24mm I guess so. :D

Buy once and get it over and done with, I've too many times taken the intermediate steps and wished I just got the Nikon 24-70 in the first place. Save up a few more months, it is worth it...

PS. I've got the Tamron 28-75 as well, didn't even get a single offer on it when I put it up for sale. Is the Nikon 4.5x better in second hand prices...Absolutely, it is very very good...
PPS. Same story really with the Sigma lenses, ultimately they will sell, but (my experience is with the 70-200's) again the Nikon just blows me away...

Also, I did take the decision way back in My D300 days to buy only FX glass, the one exception was my Tokina 11-16. At the time I was not sure I would go the FX route, but I knew that either way I would be safe. :)

Remember there are two sigma 24-70's.

The HSM one is a LOt better than the other older one.

IMo its too narrow for me on a crop. Good range on a ff.

Cheers to you all.. Looks more then likely that I will follow down the path of getting Nikon 24-70... Time to start saving.....

You won't regret it!

Going by all the reviews around that info is back to front IQ wise. The newer HSM models are softer than the older non HSM. ( canon versions anyway )
